Which actors/actresses do you irrationally hate?

Asked by jenandcolin (2301points) January 5th, 2011

I read this article:
http://gawker.com/5724650/which-actresses-do-you-irrationally-hate?skyline=true&s=i
about actors/actresses (actually, the article only discusses actresses) that people dislike for no reason. I thought…this would make an interesting fluther discussion.
Personally, I can not stand Keira Knightly, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman (I know- everyone loves NP) or Ashton Kutcher.
This is different from celebrities that people dislike for easily defined reasons (for example Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan).
Anyone else have celebrities that bother them and they can’t figure out why?

No.

I was amazed to hear that Selena Gomez was getting death threats after being photographed in a romantic clench with Justin Bieber.

Deja_vu's avatar

I hate Anne Hathaway too! Yes, and I don’t know why. Also Jennifer Garner and Meatloaf to name a few. I hated Jack Black ‘till I met him in person in 2007. He’s really nice.

jenandcolin's avatar

@marinelife – I just heard about that this morning. Pretty crazy…are they thinking the death threats came from young girls (his fans, I believe)?

Angelina Jolie

I’m not president of Jessica Alba’s fan club either.
also Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Charlie Sheen…

This could be longer. I shall cease.

Catherine Tate. God love her, I’ll bet she’s a lovely person but I only have to set eyes on her and it feels like someone is running up and down over my grave. My skin crawls. LOL. Poor woman, don’t know if its her voice <shudder> or what but I missed an entire series of Dr Who because she was in it. Makes no sense whatsoever, but there it is. I just simply can’t bear the woman’s presence in anything.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Kirsten Dunst. I avoid movies I would otherwise like to see if she’s in them. I don’t know why, but she makes my teeth itch.

janbb's avatar

I don’t waste my time hating mythical creatures. but I must say i am slightly put off by Renee Zellwiger.

Seelix's avatar

Colin Farrell. Will Ferrell.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

Keanu Reeves and Sean Penn are two that I’m not in love with. ;)

Craig T Nelson. ;)

Tom Cruise, the girl from Twilight.

That’s it. I don’t pay enough attention to Hollywood. And, I don’t have cable. Yay!

David…“I can’t act my way out of a paper bag” Caruso & Doowayne “the pebble” Johnson. Not my cup of darjeeling.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Emma Watson my list could go on, I dislike a lot of celebrities for no real reason other than they irritate the shite out of me!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I can’t stand Ben Stiller or Adam Sandler most of the time. Their type of nervous, embarassing humor strikes me as mostly unfunny.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

I can’t stand Katherine Heigl or Shia Labeouf.

Jude's avatar

My girlfriend’s Mama wouldn’t like this, but, Michael Douglas.

I agree with Shia.

Jennifer Aniston
Matthew McCona-however it is that you spell it
Hugh Laurie.

filmfann's avatar

Wow, a lot of my favorites are listed above.

I don’t think I hate any actor or actress irrationally. I definitely have good reasons.
Nick Cage, John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Will Ferrell, Keanu Reeves, Burt Reynolds, Jerry Seinfeld… I hate them because they suck.

Austinlad's avatar

Beg to differ with @filmfan that all those actors sucked. Each of them has turned in excellent performances when correctly cast and directed. Two of Cage’s best were “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Peggy Sue Got Married.” Travolta was excellent in “Saturday Night Fever” and “Phonomenon.” I really liked Reeves in “Devil’s Advodate” and, in a small part, in “Parenthood.” Burt Reynolds made lots of good movies when he was younger, and I really liked Cruise in “Vanilla Sky.”

Deja_vu's avatar

I don’t like Dane Cook. He’s not funny.

Russell_D_SpacePoet's avatar

Eric Roberts and Ray Liota. Can’t stand either of them and don’t really have a good reason why.

filmfann's avatar

@Austinlad I did like Cage in Wild at Heart, and as Fu Manchu in Werewolf Women of the SS.
Travolta was good in SNF and Pulp Fiction.
Tom Cruise was good in Born On The Fourth Of July.
Keanu Reeves was funny in I Love You To Death.
They seemed to have built careers on doing crappy work. Occasionally they do well. I am sure it is by a directors guiding hand, and not their talent.

Deja_vu's avatar

@Russell_D_SpacePoet Really? No good reason? They suck. lurve for that.

Jude's avatar

Yes, Travolta!

etignotasanimum's avatar

Tom Cruise, Kristen Stewart, and Kevin Bacon to name a few. There’s just something in their facial expressions that irritates me to no end.

BoBo1946's avatar

I don’t hate any, but like some more than others.

jenandcolin's avatar

@BoBo1946 : I agree- “hate” isn’t the ideal word…
I used it b/c the author of the article I am citing used it.
What I would say is which actors/actresses do you “dislike or seem to bother you for some reason that you can not figure out”

Well some people don’t like Sean Penn’s politics, That isn’t the same as not liking him. He is a formidable actor and seemingly quite genuine, with a good work ethic, although i can kind of see how he would not appeal to a certain type of person. i don’t particularly like Arnie’s politics or Ronald Reagan’s or Charlton Heston’s or John Wayne’s much for that matter, but they aren’t really hate-able. i had problems with Julia Roberts, she was atrociously wooden in Notting Hill but she is a good actress, Sandra Bullock annoyed me a bit, Andie McDowell needs a good talking too, and more drastic measures if that doesn’t have the desired affect, Kieran Knightly needs to get over herself or she will go the way of Ms McDowell, they should all be sent to a Siberian boot camp in an Oliver Stone adaptation of War and Peace. Nick cage doesn’t suck, he just got repetitive and lazy, Samuel Jackson too, they just go into auto pilot for movie after movie, Will Smith is far too upbeat and full of himself, he’s like the black version of gay pride, irritating if you’re not in the mood…..But above all else i really do hate seeing Actors in Advertisements, that is the gravest sin. Most Actors are illusionists, with questionable if even discernible personalities, when you scratch beneath the surface, they really struggle interacting intelligently and engagingly without a script.

BoBo1946's avatar

@jenandcolin Got’cha… Tom Cruise lost me when he was so rude to the host of the Today Show. Cannot think of his name. Oh, Matt Lauer!

Don’t know if anyone ever watches DVD special features of cast interviews, particularly when they all start falling over themselves in a bid to out compliment each other, we don’t need mutual appreciation societies, that level of sycophancy should never get by the board of censors. One of the saddest stories i heard was when Sergio Leone used Robert De Niro in Once upon a time in America, and remarked how refreshing it was to work with a real actor as opposed to Clint Eastwood, Sad to discover that revelation so late in the day, Leone died not long after that.

flutherother's avatar

I’ve never been keen on Steve Martin and I don’t usually like Nicholas Cage though I thought he was great in Kick-Ass.

jenandcolin's avatar

@flutherother : I have the hots for Steve Martin (and Bill Murray). But, I have heard a lot of people find him irritating.

Kardamom's avatar

I don’t really hate any actors, but I’m mildly irritated by Tom Cruise. Everytime he gets that big old toothy grin his eyes look like they will pop out of his head and he will go on a rampage. Plus his politics/religion/business gives me the creeps.

Don’t care for Keanu Reeve’s acting, although he is pretty handsome.

I don’t think Will Ferrell is funny.

Craig T. Nelson, seems nice, but he’s boring to watch and listen to.

Those 2 guys from Good Will Hunting are boring.

And Patrick Warburton (from Rules of Engagement is creepy and boring at the same time)

And Eminem is just creepy and kind of white-trashy and seems like he would be really mean.

faye's avatar

Charlize Theron, Sondra Locke, that comedian with squinty eyes who just yells. Charlize is a good actress I know, but I just can’t watch her in most stuff.

Supacase's avatar

Julia Roberts
Tara Reed
Robin Williams
Whoopi Goldberg

iLove's avatar

For some reason, I cannot stand Nicolas Cage either. I thought his acting was great in Face/Off – but otherwise he seems like he’s the same character in every movie.

Cage fans, please don’t spend time trying to make me like him, the question was about “irrational hate”

filmfann's avatar

One more good Cage film: Red Rock West. That, and the two I mentioned are the only good things he has done, including Patricia Arquette.

WestRiverrat's avatar

Another one for me is Jim Carrey.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Oh, yeah, Jim Carrey gives me the willies.

YARNLADY's avatar

Bruce Willis

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Lindsay Lohan is the only one that comes to mind, but you specifically listed her as easily disliked. I really, really can’t stand her, though.

Austinlad's avatar

I used to avoid anything Adam Sandler was in, but after seeing “Funny People,” in which I thought he was excellent, I’ve changed my mind about him.

filmfann's avatar

@Austinlad my favorite Sandler movie is Shakes The Clown.

@Jude The cure for not liking Hugh Laurie: watch old Jeeves and Wooster episodes!!

For a long time I had a grudge against Kate Hudson. I saw “Almost Famous” one afternoon when I was too young, and the drugs and sex upset me. Then my friend came over that night and demanded that we watch it, so I had to sit through it again. The following night at a slumber party we watched it. Being outside my comfort zone three times in two days was unpleasant, so I didn’t forgive Kate Hudson for it until just recently.

faye's avatar

I forgot Will Ferrell.

hotgirl67's avatar

I think Angelina Jolie is beautiful but still can’t stand her no matter how many organizations she is involved in.There’s just something about her.

Kardamom's avatar

@jenandcolin I never cared for Bill Murray until I saw him in Lost in Translation, then I fell in love. I just can’t explain it. I’ve always enjoyed Steve Martin for his humor, but he was so wonderful in Shopgirl (although the ending was kind of heartbreaking) and It’s Complicated. Love both them fellas.

faye's avatar

Oh, Oh, I was so wrong, it’s Cameron Diaz I don’t like , not Charlize Theron. There just was a movie with Charlize in it advertised.

snowberry's avatar

For some reason, my husband can’t stand Wilford Brumley. He says he’s a bad actor, but I can’t see the problem

writingmylifeaway's avatar

All you mentioned except Ashton Kutcher. He’s awesome. But I have to add Angelina Jolie, and ALL those slutty singers these days.
