Is it true that one can find cheap boat trips from LA to Hawaii?

Asked by sunyata_rakshasa (350points) January 5th, 2011

I have heard rumors of cargo ships and things of this nature, taking passengers who bring their own food and water, to the islands for as low as a 100 bucks, which is bad ass. lol

Is there any truth to this?, Is I suppose my first question.

second. Where can I find these ships?

and third. If any one has done this. What was your experience?

thanks every one for your answers. :D

Honestly, I’ve never heard of it.

“The Passenger Vessel Services Act, which dates back to about 1886. The PVSA applies both to cruise ships & cargo ships and states that non-US registered merchant ships cannot transport passengers between US ports. Almost all merchant ships are non-US registered.. There are ways to stop in a foreign port to get around it, which is what most cruise ships do.

Matson is the only US flag freighter that goes between the West Coast & Hawaii. They don’t take passengers

There are cruise ships that get around the Act by taking on passengers in Ensenada, Mexico or Vancouver, Canada. You might want to look into whether or not you can find freighter travel from either of those two cities.”
