Is a 3.542 a good gpa for my first semester my freshman year in high school?

Asked by Sunshine1245 (123points) January 6th, 2011

I took Spanish 1, Geometry, Health, Band, Honors English 9, Choir, Geography and History of the World, and PBS (Principles of Biomedical Science). With these classes is a gpa of 3.542 good for my freshman year: first semester? And am I on a good track to a good college?

It’s okay.

What do you mean by “good” college?

I don’t think she’s fishing, @submariner – it’s good that she wants to know if she’s on a good track. And for your first semester, that’s pretty good. Keep it up! You could get into AP classes and all, and maybe take college levels by your senior year.

Im not fishing for compliments, I just want to know if it is good or not. This is my first year of high school and i want to get into a college for neonatal nursing and im scared to death to get grades or a gpa that wont allow me to do that.

That is a pretty good GPA. Remember though, colleges look more closely at your senior and junior GPA’s. It is good to maintain good grades even this early on because that will determine what kinds of classes you can take later on in high school. A good high school GPA can even help you get a scholarship as well. I was awarded a very larger merit scholarship based on my high GPA.

Also taking honors classes looks really good. In my experience, many colleges prefer a B in an honors class over an A in a regular class. Taking classes that will prepare you for your major also looks really good. All in all, you seem to be on a good track for college, if you can maintain it.

Not bad at all.

Your GPA is strong; but more importantly, it is above average for nursing students. Don’t slack off, of course, and keep trying to improve. It cannot hurt you to do so. But even if you stay on this track, you should be fine. Good luck!

a 3.5 is very good in my opinion but talk to your guidance counselor! they’ll know best.

[Mod Says:] In this age where some GPA’s exceed 4.0 this is indeed a legit question and not in any way fishing for attention.

If you have nothing helpful to contribute please resist the temptation to post and move on to the next question.

Thanks!

Maintain that through your senior year and you’ll be good.

It depends. My cousin and I both graduated from HS the same year. Different schools, with the same GPA. But her school used a 5.0 scale and my school used a 4.0.

For the first semester, they are both above average. If you are in a 4.0 school you are doing great and should have no problem getting into a top rated nursing school.

A 5.0 school you are still doing better than average, but will need to step it up to get into one of the better nursing schools.

Considering the courses you took, I think you are on the correct side of the curve.

It depends on the high school’s grading scale, but a 3.5 is generally a great way to start. If you keep this up for four years, almost all colleges will be glad to read your admission form. Cappex has a nice graph for each college and institution comparing GPAs, ACT/SAT scores, and whether each applicant was accepted. I only wish I’d thought about colleges as early as my freshman year, so good for you.

I think you are doing plenty good. I doubt anyone has been looked upon poorly for maintaining good grades. There may be a lot of challenges ahead of you in the coming years to overshadow a GPA, and you will discover the strength and focus of your own spirit.

Being humble is important in the scheme of things, as no one makes it through this life on their own. Grades and awards are things that other people give you. Honor, humility, respect and integrity are gifts you give yourself. People apply manners and are polite to others because they respect them, and respect themselves too.

Which is more important to you, and what carries more weight in your life…what YOU believe, or what others think? Your beliefs guide your life, keep them strong.

On your death bed you will NOT say “I wish I had made more money” but you might say
“I wish I had been a little more kind.”

Do keep your GPA in mind, but only you know the true quality of work you put into your studies, and what is really important to you. No one gets to decide that for you, and no one gets to tell you who you are. You do, and you alone present that to the world. Stand tall.
