What is your favorite underrated show?

Asked by littlebeck30 (346points) January 7th, 2011

My favorite indie, underrated show is Freaks and Geeks, which I’m currently watching now. What are your favorite hidden treasures? Plays, musicals, books, movies, tv shows?

I loved Freaks and Geeks and was so disappointed when it went off the air. I also enjoyed Joan of Arcadia and My So Called Life.

There was a BBC TV series based on the James Herriot book All Creatures Great and Small (in the 90’s) starring Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy that was magnificent.

Also loved the 2005 Masterpiece Theater mini-series Bleak House with Gillian Andersen

Probably the best book I ever read was Standing In the Rainbow by Fannie Flagg

And the best play I ever saw was a recent production by Greg Evans based (and titled) on his cartoon character Luann.

Best under-rated food I ever ate was a dish of baked Brussels sprouts in a parmesan and bread crumbs crust.

Best under-rated museum tour was at the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas, which just had to close up shop due to the horrible economy.

Top Gear. The BBC version. Even non car enthusiasts can relate. It’s just fun to watch in general.

Also what what @noelleptc said. Adventure Time is the shiznit! Also I think it’s debatable if it’s actually for kids sometimes, lol.

Running Wilde and Arrested Development. Odd, both were on Fox and killed off early.

@SavoirFaire I’m not sure Futurama would be considered underrated. XD

Well, it doesn’t exist anymore, but I vote for Duckman. Seen all the episodes that are ever gonna be made, and how I now wish for a fucking boxset. Goddammit. Why isn’t it happening?

SavoirFaire's avatar

@Symbeline Well, it was underrated enough to get canceled once. Plus, it’s really damn good. Good call on the Duckman box set, though.

Berserker's avatar

@SavoirFaire Yeah it did get canceled, I remember…although I thought that was because of controversy…which would prove it to NOT be underrated. But if that’s not it, what’s the story? I’m curious, I don’t know much bout the show.

I don’t know much about it, but I sure as fuck know that Bender kicks ass lol, from what I’ve seen anyways.

satyagraha's avatar

@Not_the_CIA So was Firefly. I guess Fox has a bad habit of doing that.

Aster's avatar

…and Hoarders, yes. I record them all.

@Symbeline It wasn’t due to controversy, but rather a convoluted set of issues involving time slots, ratings, and executives. Here’s the short version. In its original time slot (Sundays at 8:30 pm), Futurama did very well. Then it was moved around a bit and eventually settled into 7:00 pm on Sunday nights. The show was never aired regularly in this time slot because of how often it was preempted by sports programs, and the network executives weren’t interested enough to advertise the show.

They even went so far as to advertise their Sunday night line up with the slogan “It all begins Sunday at 8, here on Fox!” Groening was angry at Fox for mistreating his show, and Fox was angry at Groening for not just doing whatever he was told. The situation devolved, and Fox stopped buying new episodes (forcing the series out of production and effectively canceling it).

Luckily, Cartoon Network kept it in syndication long enough for Comedy Central to decide it was worth reviving the series, allowing Bender to continue kicking ass.

@SavoirFaire Interesting. It’s weird how a show, no matter what it is, owes a lot of its success to time slots or what companies do with em, although I guess it’s also an obvious factor.
Maybe Duckman would have done better if it played at times other than one in the morning. :/
