Assassination of high ranking government officials are commonly in the news even though it is in another country. A federal Judge was killed, A congresswoman shot in the head and 5 people dead. Another ten in the hospital. Whether they feel it’s significant enough to break into a soap opera to report, is a judgement call. I assume you disagree with that call.

Political climate in the US is a world wide event. The Royal Wedding on the other hand….??

I don’t know anything about it, but if it truly was an act of terrorism, then it makes sense that it would be global news. However… I really hate that murders in general are starting to be called “acts of terrorism”. So was this an act of terrorism, or was this a crazy person who murdered them?

@DrasticDreamer No one knows for sure yet. Hopefully a nut job! Could have been an anti-government type. We just don’t know yet.

It’s because someone went on a rampage and decided to shoot a lot of people.

But I agree with @coffeenut. While tragic and sad, it is American news. I also think there was no need to interrupt regular old tv for this. I can’t see American tv being interrupted if one of our premiers was assassinated. Put it on regular news.

@faye Our TV was interrupted when Diana died. Just saying. And also, if they really did think it was a true act of terrorism, wouldn’t you want to know?

The U.S. is, in essence, the last superpower. It’s a global power, with significant global influence. The murder of one of the people in its highest level of national government may be the cause for a shift in policy, the beginning of a campaign, or any other number of acts that may have global ripple effects that individual governments and news outlets would have a profound interest in as they may have a profound effect on the citizens of their nations.

Like it or not, U.S. news much of the time is global news.

I think that until they know more, they assume it’s terrorism and then downgrade it to “crazy person”. Depending on how soon they interrupted the show after it happened, they may have thought it might happen again – have Congresspeople being shot all over America right now.

Its not terrorism. It sounds like an assassination, a targeted killing of an individual.

@DrasticDreamer Diana was Britain. Even so I think a princess trumps politicians. I agree that this shooting is important as news.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@faye Why on earth would a princess trump a politician?

faye's avatar

As far as being newsworthy once dead and, perhaps, you need to be born into the whole royal family, queen on your money state of being. For Canadians, she trumps politicans and we are talking about cutting into Canadian tv for news.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@faye I’m not saying it’s wrong. I’m just wondering how someone comes to the conclusion that a princess is, indeed, more important than a politician. I’m trying to understand the perspective.

I guess I just don’t understand the big deal about TV, in general, being cut into when something that is perceived to be important happens. I’d want to know if something major happened in another country, and I would actually prefer that my TV be cut into, in that case.

Yes, it is world news. Just as it was news here in the US when a Pakistani Governor was assassinated by his own bodyguard.

All over the EU it was on TV – for it’s brutality and efecting a politician… we are nearer and have much more in common than the “normal” american or european think.

no i disagree, our lives our blasted morning to night with a sense of impending doom and tragedy. The news can wait 20 mins, When World War III is declared fine. People get Murdered in Afghanistan and Waziristan daily, nobody interrupts the daily TV schedule for that. As appalling as this rampage is, it needs to be dealt with in a sober and measured fashion. The urgency and appetite for political motivation and hotchpotch theories is wildly inflammatory.

The initial shooting – noteworthy event that inevitably gets mentioned on news programmes around the world. Still leading the bulletins the next day – skewed priorities.

ml3269's avatar

Exactly… Murder in western wolrd does have a world-wide (western) audience… the thousands of deaths in Africa (each day) because of hunger and healable diseases have not. I do not understand either where to or who make this difference…

Congressmen make important decisions and are considered important people, so them getting shot effects us because congressmen decide on our laws and how we’re governed. Frankly, I’m glad they’re reporting things like that instead of unimportant celebrity mishaps or animal stories.
