I just pulled out some of the hair on my eyebrows, can you help?

Asked by Plone3000 (668points) January 12th, 2011

Okay, so my eyebrows are not completely gone, rather I have holes were there is no hair. Just today I pulled out quite a bit of hair closest to the eye.

I think I might be a little OCD or have some kind of nervous habits. My new year’s resolution was to stop picking blemishes on my face, but I think I may have turned to pulling Out my eyebrows! Like I said I managed to stop myself before going completely overboard, but my eyebrows still look pretty messed up. Usually what happens is I may pluck a single hair on one eyebrow that looks out of place, then I pluck one on the other side to make it even. When I do this I might accidentally pull out one more hair on one side than the other. I feel obliged to go back and pull out the same amount of hair on both sides to make it even, and before you know it my eyebrows look horrible.

This might sound pathetic, or be a little more that what you were expecting to get yourself into. Yet I feel I don’t really have anyone to talk to about it because it’s embarrassing. So I would just like to know: How long does it typically take for eyebrows to grow back? What can help to grow them back?(I herd brushing them with a toothbrush helps) Are there any techniques that can help me to stop this, such as breathing techniques? And, most importantly, can I cause permanent damage by doing this?

Any help, information, or advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I am not sure how long it takes eyebrows to grow back but they will grow back. I don’t think brushing with the toothbrush will help all that much. In the meantime, fill it in with eyeliner or eyebrow shadow.

Thanks, I realize I might just be overreacting, but It helps to get this off my chest.
The encouragement helps as well.

It won’t take very long. A couple weeks to have stubble probably, and a month for it to really fill in. You can’t really help them grow.

Sounds like trichotillomania . . . . just sayin’

@Kayak8 agreed. It does sound like trichotillomania. This may be something you want to discuss with a doctor.

Yeah, that’s trichotillomania. It’s an impulse control disorder on the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. Very annoying for the sufferer, even in its weaker forms. Bleh. You might wanna check out http://www.trich.org/.

Go to the Mac counter at your local department store. Get an angle brush and ask the clerk to match your color and get a shadow for your eyebrows. I have thin eyebrows and no one knows I paint them on.

I agree 100%. Trichotillomania could be OCD, or it could be stress/anxiety related. Perhaps to avoid the stress you feel from the blemishes on your face, you pick your eyebrows. It would be a good idea to see a counselor/psychologist who can help you out.

You could cause permanent hair loss by continually pulling out your hair. It’ll most likely grow back, but there’s a chance it will be a lot thinner than before. I don’t know how long eyebrow hair takes to grow back, but there’s no miracle drug to make hair grow back.

If it’s anxiety related, breathing techniques and meditation might help you deal with the stress in a more constructive manner. Regular exercise, getting a good night’s sleep, and eating healthy can also help.

Don’t get all freaked out by everyone diagnosing. Now that you kmow about your tendency, you can see if you can avoid doing it.

I am a ‘picker’, too. Pimples, scabs, and eyebrows. I seem to do it almost subconsciously, but have had some success if I really concentrate on not doing it. In the meantime, I agree with using a brow liner or powder to fill in the thin areas. Be sure to go a shade or two lighter than you think you need, otherwise it’ll look weird.

I do it too… I have to really stop myself… What helps is getting or making stick-on eyebrow stencils, and follow them while you’re plucking… You just cut the eyebrow shape you want out of a semi-sticky material, like the “sticky” part of a post it, make sure they’re even and put them over your eyebrows, now just pluck everything AROUND the stencil and when you pull the guides off you won’t have gone overboard. :)

To remedy the situation you have going now, just get some (non-liquid) eyeliner in the shade of your brows and draw them in. no biggy. lots of people shave their brows or don’t have much brow hair to begin with, so they fill their brows in every day with eyeliner.

Another solution may be to only let OTHERS do your brows.. like you could get them waxed or have someone you trust be in charge of doing them every few weeks. And put the tweezers away for a bit. :)
