Do you think people will always be at this war with gays? WIll gay people ever find peace and have them live their lives without the judgment?

Asked by Vincent_Lloyd (3007points) January 12th, 2011

Do you think so? I think no since we can’t even get over the smallest things in life, but I think it’ll either decrease or increase as time passes by. What do you think fluther? Give me your opinion on the situation.

Yes, we will be able to eventually accept homosexuals fully into our society where they’ll be treated just the same as everyone else, (if we still haven’t killed ourselves by that point). But as @IHateMusic said no one can live without being judged. Ex. How the hell can you hate music, shame on you IHateMusic! see?

Hey Vin, great question mate. This sort of change in attitudes within society has to come from the grass roots level, you and me that is. Unfortunately there are always going to be people with xenophobic points of view towards these issues. I have several really great friends who identify as homosexual, and they are some of the greatest people I know.
I think the best thing we can do is to be open and accepting towards everyone regardless of their race, sexuality, etc. And to be vocal and forthcoming in questioning our friends and peers when they express negative viewpoints about such issues.
I have hope that in the future we can all live together in peace and without fear,
and i hope you do to.

@Arbornaut Yeah I know what you mean, but sadly as we all know on planet earth there is no actual peace there will always be a disturbance in the air of the smallest things, ya know? But all I wish for is peace to reach us even if it’s only temporary.

I, too, agree with @IHateMusic. That said, I do think that homosexuals will someday be able to live in a world where the majority harbors no special prejudice against them. We might never eliminate the bigots, but I think we can make them a smaller and smaller minority. And in the end, that is really the best one can realistically expect.

@Vincent_Lloyd Well I have hope, and will do my bit to help bring about the changes in attitude.

No one lives without judgment. I hope that one day gays or anyone else will be able to pursue their happiness. Religion is the real problem with gay marriage in my opinion. I don’t understand it myself It’s like the religious think that gays marrying takes something away from the straight marriages. Ridiculous In my opinion for them to feel threatened by gay marriage.

I agree that no one will ever live without judgment like @Russell_D_SpacePoet says, but I do also believe that there will be a time when gays will find peace just like so many of the opressed peoples of our world. The Jews, Romas, the physically and mentally handicapped escaped Nazi Germany and are now able to live (for the most part) without that persecution they once suffered. African Americans from diverse places that had to suffer the pain of slavery are now able to live in America (for the most part) as free people with rights. Native Americans which were almost wiped out by the genocide committed to them are now living as citizens (on or off reservations) with rights in America (oh, the irony!). People will always be opressed in some manner, but if they remain true to their beliefs and continue to fght for their rights I know that someday gays will have the right to marry anywhere they choose (and any other right they see fit to fight for).

One cannot hope to see a problem disappear without cutting it out at the root. Homophobia and anti-gay sentiments will be around as long as a mythology exists saying heterosexual relationships are the only normal ones. We have a chance of getting rid of that, but not a good one.

Some people will always be at war with people who are queer, yes.

Sunny2's avatar

YES! Each generation seems to be more accepting of them. Look at all the clubs in high schools across the country which are composed of both gay and straight students. There will always be some people who are prejudiced about any group they see as different from, and therefore unacceptable, to themselves. They become more silent about their objections as society becomes more critical about these unreasonable biases.

Every year the percentage of people worldwide who “at war” with gays gets smaller. I’m not sure about the rate, but in the year 2150 I expect these people to be a tiny exotic minority, maybe something like the flat earth society today. Progress is unstoppable.
