Do you know of any affordable private medical insurance?

Asked by Skaggfacemutt (9820points) January 14th, 2011

My son is starting a job where health insurance is not offered. Is there any private health insurance that is actually affordable to someone who only makes $30,000 a year?

I have Blue Cross. The Smart 5000 plan.
It’s going up, up, up…but, as a self employed person it’s what I have to do.

5000 deductable, then 70/30 with modest dental benefits.
It is costing me $350 a month now. An increase of about $250 in the last 3 years, but, I am over 50 now…it is what it is.

I think your income is too high to qualify for medical/medicaid at this time, but, maybe check into it.

I’m in the gray zone, too much cash in the bank and assets to qualify, but..the day may come where I sigh everything over to my daughter and go for assistance.

You just have to shop around to find the best plan for you, and, constantly be willing to revise and find new ones that might be m ore suitable.

Pain in the ass it is.

Oops, mistake…should have said an increase of about $150 over 3 years.

I signed up at 48 and my premiums were $194 a month, now they are $350

What state does your son live in? That makes a difference.

He lives in Utah. He is 31 years old, and $350 a month would kill him! Besides, he has a two-year-old daughter that he also has to cover.

Put affordable health insurance utah into Google. Then put in his information. Remember that he can raise the deductible so that the insurance only covers catastrophic events.

I agree with @marinelife about the catastrophic events. Insurance that covers every little thing with only a small copay is insanely expensive. He probably only needs to be covered in case something big happens. He should look for a plan that has a high deductable but also maybe an ER clause. Meaning, if his 2 year old falls off the monkey bars and breaks her arm, his deductable/copay for the ER is rather low. If he (and his daughter) are in good health and if he is a nonsmoker, he should be able to find something within reason.

One thing I would suggest is to talk to someone who sells insurance, don’t just do an online quote. A real live person can do more to tailor a health plan to your son’s needs. Also, he might want to look into whether or not Utah offers health insurance plans for children. Here in Connecticut there’s a state plan at a reduced cost to help cover children without insurance. It might cost less for him to insure the little girl that way but purchase private insurance for himself.

Your grandson can possibly be covered by the state under the state’s CHIP. Your son will probably be able to find an HMO or Blue Cross high deductible individual plan. Young men get the best rates of all of us. My nephew is 26 and pays $79 a month for a Blue Cross policy with a $2500 hospital deductible and doctor copays. I don’t remember what the copays are. They are high—like $40.

Depending on the type of coverage he needs, there are all sorts of low cost options for individual coverage. Check out HumanaOne and United.
