How does recycling work at the recycling plant?

I know we all save plastic and aluminum in our special recycling trash can. but, what happens when the articles to recycled arrive at the recycling plant? How is the aluminum separated from the plastic? Are there humans there that perform this duty or is the trash somehow separated by a computer?
