I am pursuing Masters in Software Engineering. I am confused about selecting a subject – i have the following options -
1. Ruby on Rails
2. Unix
3. Object Oriented programming in JAVA
Pick one out of the three above with reasons.

I don’t know a whole lot about programming, but as far as I know Ruby is a good place to start. I’ve used both Unix and Ruby, never programmed Java though. Ruby is good because it is so intuitive to use. Java is good to know because it is widely used. It is good to know Unix, I know someone who has mastered all 3, but mainly used Unix and some Ruby. It really depends on where you end up as to which one you’ll use. But if you’re just starting out, I’d suggest ruby – it is user friendly for beginners and will teach you some of the basic principles that you can carry through toi other languages.
