Are there any other browsers like Chrome?

Asked by Aesthetic_Mess (7894points) January 20th, 2011

I recently “lost” Chrome on my computer, and don’t know how to fix it, so I’m looking for a browser like Chrome.
With a minimal interface, but can still hold all my add-ons like Diigo and Evernote Web Clipper, and my Favorites bar, without looking so bulky like how Firefox looks right now as I’m on it.
Are there any other browsers like Chrome out there?

Try the Firefox 4 Beta 9. I think it will impress you – Mozilla have learnt the lessons Chrome taught us.

Can you not re-download chrome?

Aesthetic_Mess's avatar

No, I can’t re-download Chrome which makes me very sad, it just won’t work anymore on my computer anymore.

Did you do a search on your pc for the chrome.exe? This is very strange… Are you running a version of windows?

Aesthetic_Mess's avatar

I have Windows 7. I uninstalled and then reinstalled it, but when I tried to reinstall it, my computer shut down to avoid any damage to it.

@Aesthetic_Mess – your OS is broken. The fact that even a basic function such as browsing the internet is problematic suggests that it’s very broken.

Personally, I would reinstall Windows.

if your chrome is broken and to be honest this is a quick fix you can use the portable version here, it runs straight from the folder so you could even use it off of a usb stick http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable

or try chromium the open source version of chrome, its basically identical you won’t notice the difference except the icon is blue, and im using it right now…

@Tobotron Damn you for beating me to Chromium!

Seriously though, Chromium and the portable version of Chrome should both work fine. If not then you have other issues.

I was trying to think of Chromium – it is identical to Chrome, except I believe that it’s more security oriented.

There’s also Canary which is a smoking fast Chrome beta build. I would go with that or Firefox 4 RC. I Also agree that you might have a bigger problem with your computer than just Chrome that you might want to look into.

I agree with @the100thmonkey. I’ve been running the new firefox beta for about two weeks now, and I can’t think of a single complaint I have with it.

@the100thmonkey I can browse the internet on another browser I downloaded Firefox. It’s just Chrome that won’t work

Nope that’s why I stick to Chrome. But I guess Firefox is a close second.

PS – I’m on Opera now…and it’s kind of awesome. I would give that a shot.

Lets not turn this into Browser Wars.

Personally, I prefer Firefox as I find the Webkit-based browsers too limited, but the OP seems to like them and wants something similar. Chromium is the closest that I can think of, but Safari is worth mentioning (even though I hate it) as it is based on the same Webkit engine as Chrome and Chromium and thus fairly similar to them.

Opera is fine in it’s own right, but it isn’t similar to Chrome, nor is Firefox.
