Do you often change the lyrics to a song in your head?

Asked by Arbornaut (2597points) January 22nd, 2011

Or out loud? When your at work or pottering around the house do you sometimes make up your own lyrics or change them around for a laugh? Does that really annoying pop song suddenly get a whole lot better?
Or have you heard a song a million times before and then been caught out singing it, only to be laughed at and have your version corrected by a friend?

I do this all the time.

When my kids were young Caillou was popular and the opening song annoyed me a little. I made this up instead:

I’m just a little shit
Sometimes I throw a fit
Sometimes it’s just snit I’m Caillou.

Still make me giggle.

I’ve passed that behaviour onto my kids and they destroy songs regularly.

Yes! Most recently, I came up with this in the shower (I think you’ll get the tune!):

Brushing and shaving and washing and flossing,
Using the toilet, of course always flushing,
Washing my hands to make sure they’re all clean,
These are a few of my morning routines…

All the time.

When my partner and I were driving back to Rhode Island from Western NY a few years back, “You Spin Me Round” by Dead or Alive came on. After a nine or ten hour drive, we were relieved when we got into Worcester, MA, which is about thirty minutes from where we lived. So these were my lyrics:

You spin me right Rhode Island right round,
Like a Rhody Island, right round, round round.

That was after an Interpol song several hours earlier had been turned into an ode to Massachusetts. I was pretty damn tired.

Always, yes! Me and my friends once joked about doing a hard rock version of the song Thank You by Dido and wanted to change the lines to be melodramatic. One of which was “The morning rain fucks up my window, ‘till I can’t see at all.”

@Joker94 That’s funny… did the chorus become “And I…. want to fuck you…..”??!

I change the lyrics of songs when I sing to my cat. He seems to like it.

That Violent Femmes song “Blister in the sun”
There is a line that goes“Body and beats I stain my sheets I don’t even know why”.
I change it in my head to “When I eat beets I stain my sheets I don’t even know why”.

That’s just one example.

I do to country songs all the time. Mainly because I see country music as a joke and it should be made fun of.

I sometimes find myself changing a word or a sentence in a lyric… especially when the lyric doesn’t quite match the metre. For some reason, I found myself doing this a lot during the holidays with carols. I think this comes from writing limericks, which I’ve always enjoyed doing.

I always change song lyrics to fit the subject, be it Mr. Fiance or the kitties. There is always singing going on in my house, and it rarely makes sense to anyone else.

’‘Your a mean one Mr. Grinch you smell just like a fish! Dadadada Mr. GrinchI ’’ I don’t know what the real lyrics are but that’s what I originally thought he was saying.

All the time. When Hooked on a Feeling comes on the radio, I have to smush “Texaco!” in the chorus every time.
