Why do all hotel soaps smell the same?

Asked by crisedwards (329points) January 22nd, 2011

I’ve stayed in very fancy hotels and cheap motels and the soap they provide always smells the same; and unlike any other perfume. Sometimes the soaps are basic little bars, sometimes shaped into fancy shapes and carry the brand names of big cosmetic companies: Neutrogena, etc. But the perfume is always “hotel soap” scent.

What’s cost effective and basically pleasing across the board?
Whatever that is, most hotels and motels will use.

That’s because generally, all soap is made chemically the same (unless you’re buying a special kind of soap like exfoliating/moisturizing or something along those lines). The soap Hotels provide is soap on it’s most basic, bland level. Most special brands of soaps have their varieties of scents added – you take the scent away, it’ll probably smell something like the soap you find at most Hotels.

what pleases one consumer won’t please another, so they make a generic, non-offensive scented soap and it pleases most across the board. (plus there might be people cheating on their spouses or something and they can’t have them taking a shower and going home smelling like gardenias or something!)

Do they?

I don’t find that they all smell the same.

I agree, they don’t all smell the same to me. For example, Malin + Goetz (yes, there is a trademarked plus sign in the name) doesn’t smell like Aveda. At least not to me!

I’m thinking you haven’t stayed in enough hotels to tell the difference. I have not found that all hotel soaps smell the same, and not all are the same quality. I have stayed in 100’s of hotels over the past 50 years, and in my opinion, your premise is not valid.

I think that they don’t all smell the same but they all smell “mild” as opposed to some that you can buy for home use that can be perfumed heavily (fancy soaps are one of my must-buys, and the ones I prefer are usually floral scented, which you will never find in a hotel). My guess is that is what the OP meant, “the same” as in “generically mild.”

They are generally made by the same companies just have different wrappings and smells. (Like whether it is tropical or not)

Ya, they are most probably bought in large quantities from the same supplier. By the way, what is the fragrance of these white hotel bar soaps called?
