Why do some people turn to food when there's a problem going on in their life?

Asked by remambermee (442points) January 22nd, 2011

Is it because they feel empty and think by eating, it will remove that feeling? Is there something in food that helps with their mood? Does a person just feel like giving up so they choose to enjoy food? Like, why do some people turn to food in hard times?

Food is love for the stomach. If you are missing love in other places, you turn to it.

Food is awesome…easy…cheap and everywhere.

What makes a person choose food over, say…casual sex or drugs or alcohol or smoking is really about the individual person. But eating certain foods can release a lot of awesome hormones and stuff that make us feel better about ourselves. So it’s not all about food being a metaphor – sometimes it just actually does make you happier.

Eating can comfort some people. It just depends on the relationship they develop with food. Some people get upset and immediately reach for their favorite comfort food (ice cream, chocolate, meat/potatoes, whatever it is). The more they do this, the more the feel compelled to do this when they are upset. The same thing goes with other emotions and tying them to food as well.

It’s cheaper than alcohol and usually easier to acquire, especially with no ID or prescription required (so far). It’s also mostly legal.

Another factor could be that traditionally meal time was reserved for putting aside issues and relaxation.

it provides short term and immediate pleasure and it can also have a numbing effect…thats why there is a song called “comfortably numb”

It’s a psychological thing and the reason is probably different for everyone. Filling an “empty space” or simply indulging in something you like in order to feel better about something that’s going wrong. Either way, it has to do with your relationship with food. Food is good and mostly everyone already has it. If you ask me, it’s healthier to turn to food than it is to turn to alcohol or drugs.

I wish I was one of those crazy people that work out to relieve stress. Psht!

I think so many people turn to food when they have a problem because it feels like the only thing, or one of the few things, they can control. Even if it feels like you have no other choices in life you can always choose what to eat and how much.

Why? Usually because one or both of their idiot parents gave them something to eat when they did something cute, or when they were sad, etc.

@global_nomad… there are ALWAYS choices in life other than food!

Eating just feels good…Mostly everyone loves food…I mean think about it….If your favorite food (or foods) were place in front of you for you to dig into…could you be able to eat it all with a frown?....I think not! It makes us happy.

I only turn to food when I’m lonely or with someone.
