Laptop help?

Asked by Joker94 (8180points) January 24th, 2011

Another minor issue with my laptop. Whenever I closed my laptop, it use to go into a sleep mode (I think?) and show me a log-in screen whenever I opened it back up. Ever since I updated the other day, I haven’t been able to do this. My laptop runs on Windows 7, can anyone help me restore this setting?

Access: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings.

Adjust to your hearts content.

To elaborate slightly, there are options there that allow you to alter the laptop’s behavior when you press the power button or close the lid, and you can set different profiles based on whether you are plugged in or running on battery power.

Personally, I set my laptop to Sleep when I press the power button and Do Nothing when I close the lid. I also set it up to automatically sleep if I leave it alone for more than 15 minutes on battery power, but to never sleep (unless I explicitly tell it to) when I am plugged in. That way, I can close it for a moment to move about without having to restart, can do unattended file-sharing while plugged in, and if I forget about it while it’s on battery, it won’t be dead when I get back to it (I have a 6-hour battery life, so the most I will lose is ~5%). But that is just me; you can set it up however you like.

@jerv When I looked at the options for what to do when the lid closed, it only listed Shut Down and Do Nothing and not sleep, am I going about this the wrong way?

Odd…

I vaguely recall there being something you need to do under Win7 to enable Sleep mode, but I’ve had a long day so my brain is fuzzy.

Try Advanced Settings -> Sleep—> Allow Hybrid Sleep and turn that on. I think that is it.

@mrlaconic That is the box! Thank you for the picture :)

Here’s where it gets weird, whenever I choose to expand the Sleep tab the only option listed is for Sleep Timers. :/
