What age restrictions are there for a person in US?

Asked by Chicagoboy (4points) January 26th, 2011

What age restrictions exist in US for a 25 year old person? For instance in Russia you cannot apply for a PhD if you are older than 27. You cannot join the international students’ organization AISEC unless you are young enough(the same 27 barrier). From the other hand the age restriction for alcohol drinkers is 18 and in US it’s 21. The age restriction for goverment job in Russia is 65 you should retire after that and afaik there’s no such a limitation in US.

I mean I would like to now about social and law age restrictions (the more the better)

In most states, the age at which you may legally operate a car on the roads is 16.

You can’t rent a car until you are over 25 (from the major rental companies that is).

You can’t run for President.

At 25, you’re old enough to vote (18), get married (18), and drink (usually 21).

The current age requirement for collecting minimum social security benefits is 62, and for collecting maximum social security benefits, it’s 70.

You can’t buy long guns (rifles, shotguns) until you’re 18, handguns when you’re 21 (and often requiring further permits).

Some school programs may have age requirements. I think I remember looking at a particular Physician Assistant program at one point and it had an upper age limit (meaning you have to get in before turning a certain age), but I forget what the age was.

The military also has upper age limits. They vary depending on the job the person is applying for.

@Brian1946—Marriage age varies per state

Most sports teams have age restrictions, especially for children, such as Little League and Pop Warner Football. Theme parks have different prices for different ages. Driving, voting, smoking, drinking alcohol, and gambling all have age restrictions. Work permits are required for ages 16 to 18 and work under age 16 is very carefully regulated.

Minors can repudiate written contracts, and therefore most businesses require an adult to co-sign with the minor for anything that requires a contract. There used to be legal restrictions about minors being charged with serious crimes, but that is changing.
