Why wont GOM Player play audio on an .mkv file?

Asked by Afos22 (3990points) January 26th, 2011

I am trying to play a 720p bluray file in .mkv format on GOM player, but it will not play audio. A message pops up that tells me that I need to find a “codec”. I was recommended VLC player, which works just fine, but I prefer to use GOM. How can I get video and audio to play on GOM player using an mkv file? What is a “codec” exactly? Where would I find this “codec”?

It’s that specific file – GOM normally has no problems with .mkv

Try setting GOM Player to use its internal codec for .mkv files.

Open GOM > Right click and select Preferences > Filters > Source Filter

Under ‘Source Filter Control’, tick the box next to “Matroska (.mkv)”

I usually leave them all ticked, as it saves having to download these codecs individually.

If that does not work, then you need to download the appropriate codec for an .mkv file. If you download the DivX Codec Pack, it’ll usually come as a standalone codec that can be installed and used through any media player.
