What percentage of U.S. citizens have passports?

Asked by occ (4007 points ) April 27th, 2007
Also, I have a friend who told me he read an article that stated only about 30% of the u.s. *Congress* has a passport--this seemed shockingly low to me, for a group of national public officials who shape our foreign policy--does anyone know if he is right?

Here's a website that attempts to answer this question, with links to a lot of different studies--all, of course, with very different answers. http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing/2003/01/31/how_many_america.php

P.S. Interesting article in the NY Times today, Week in Review section, about the design of the new U.S. passports. Patriotic imagery, computer chip, hey, "it's a work of art."
