Is it possible to lengthen my neck?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) January 30th, 2011

Let’s rule out stretching it with rings or any other foreign devices. I’m thinking exercises.
I have a short, wide neck and broad shoulders. It runs on both sides of my family, we all have very short necks. I’m not hoping for miracles.. but I am so envious of women with long, slender necks. Are there exercises that I can do to make mine appear even a little bit longer?
Or is it all bunk?

I think you’ve got what you’ve got.
Good posture however, counts for alot. :)

You are who you are. There is no way of lenthening your neck without doing some serious damage. You could do what some women in africa asia do and put rings around your neck. Actually you couldn’t do that because you have to start doing that as a child. A. I think you look fine the way you are.

I’m reminded of those loser types…....guys who, for reasons known only to themselves, try lengthening their todgers by evermore wacky & deluded means. Tying a weight to the bugger being one crazy example. So you have the look of Betty Boop, that’s not all bad now is it? XD

Boop-oop-a-doop! XD

Sorry, @TheOnlyNeffie! You can make a point of always holding your head up high to give the appearance of a slightly longer neck, but your neck is your neck.

You’re gorgeous as you are.

Mikewlf337's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie you could have someone hold your head and pull on it for a about 5 hours a day for maybe a year. :D

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Alright, fair enough. But why? The neck is full of muscles. Why can’t they be exercised and conditioned like any other part of the body? Again, I’m not looking for a miraculous change in appearance.

Seelix's avatar

I’m sure you could strengthen your neck muscles, but you can’t stretch your bones!

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Seelix of course not. I also know that you can’t spot reduce. I would think that I should be able to do at least some minor “sculpting” with the muscles of my neck, just as I could with any other area of my body – like my triceps or my glutes.
It doesn’t seem all that far fetched to me, but I could be way off base.

Mikewlf337's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie they can be exercised and conditioned. A thick neck usually the results of genetics. Like I said you look fine. You are a pretty woman and a thick neck doesn’t change that. We all are different.

Ladies, we love you the way you are. We don’t need the perfect barbie doll. But if you want to make it appear a little longer wear your hair up and keep the neckline on your clothing down a little. I was standing behind a woman and she looked extremely nice with this look.

You could take a look at this article. It lists a couple of exercises you can try. I don’t know that they’ll work, but they couldn’t hurt.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe although that’s very nice of you, this really isn’t about what anyone else thinks. It is something that I’d like to change for myself. I have to live with my reflection, no one else does. Thank you, and everyone else, for the kind words. I do appreciate them.

@Seelix thank you very much. I was apparently googling the wrong thing. :)

@TheOnlyNeffie I know exactly what you mean, but don’t be so hard on yourself. Society says so, but it isn’t possible to live up to all the crap society says you should accept. Life is life, it isn’t Hollywood.

At least nobody will be able to chop your head off. You can laugh at the executioner and say “HA!!! Mere bruise you wuss!!!” Sorry lol, morbid Mike couldn’t help himself when he is in a morbid moment.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Mikewlf337 I can certainly see when that would come in handy. Almost. Sort of. ;)

Mikewlf337's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie LOL all humor even morbid humor is great as long as it makes people smile. In all honesty I doubt your neck is rediculousy big. I never seen it but judging by your avatars in the past. I would say that size of your neck really isn’t a big deal. :)

Im sure you are beautiful just the way you are. I agree that good posture and holding your head high may give the appearance of a longer neck. I did see this one contraption on Dr. Oz that you placed on your collar bone and did “chin-ups” but the reason it was on the show was to tell how it did not work for anything. There are neck excersizes you can do, but I think it would only bulk up your neck and shoulders. In the Navy, the guys/girls that are overweight have to get measured around thier neck, hips and waist. The smaller the neck means larger body fat percentage (following the navy’s ridiculous body fat measurement methods) So they do all kinds of neck excersises to get thier neck skinnier by physical testing times. Crazy stuff like coating thier necks in hemmroids cream and wrapping it in celofane while sitting in the sauna…temporary fix though!

or you can distort your neck like “Fire Marshal Bill”! Don’t know who that is? Then Google it lol.

I rid my house of mirrors years ago, heheheh, that is the way to solve the I have to look at my reflection problem!

Sunny2's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie Now cut that out! Tell yourself you’re fine and let go of the insecurities in your mind. Concentrate on the things you like about yourself. Or do we have to list them for you? Look in the mirror, stick your tongue out at yourself and go be the wonderful person you are!

You would have as much luck trying to lengthen your arms via exercise as you would your neck.

That’s a “no”.
