What romance books do you recommend for a teenage girl?

Asked by nailpolishfanatic (6637points) January 30th, 2011

I am currently reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen and its quite boring because I haven’t gotten really deep into the book. I am thinking of taking one day for about an hour and just start again from the beginning but for the moment I am looking for some romantic books to read because thats the genre that I enjoy very much.
And also what do you people suggest – buying the book or just borrowing from the local library?
I never buy books. I always go to the library and just borrow them.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is much, much better than Northanger Abbey. I would be shocked (shocked!) if you don’t like it.

I second Pride and Prejudice. If you need to make it more exciting, try Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Getting books from the library is great! and the librarians will help you find more books you’ll enjoy.

@janbb and @incendiary_dan I have already read that book. It was sooooo good and I have also seen the movie. I really loved that book.

@zenvelo Yeah I think so too. Maybe I should just continue borrowing because I don’t usually re-read books that often.

On buying or renting books, I try to rent them through my library. If your library is part of a networking interloan program, you should be able to get almost any book. If not, then I suggest buying used books from Amazon dealers. Most books I’m looking for (except for textbooks) range from 1 penny to 5 bucks, before shipping.

My favorite Jane Austen book is Sense and Sensibility. After you read it, rent the movie (there are actually 2 good ones, but the best one stars Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson).

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is really good too. After you read that book, there are many excellent movie adaptations. Haven’t seen a bad one yet.

Bleak House by Charles Dickens is a pretty long book, but it’s worth it. There are several romances, a rags to riches life, and a couple of huge mysteries. After you read that, rent the recent Masterpiece Theater mini-series featuring Gillian Andersen.

And of course there’s always Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

The library is great, but you should also try going to thrift stores and garage sales. I’ve found tons of books at both from ten cents to two dollars. And ask your friends, and their mothers if you guys can start swapping books (you can either return them when you’re finished or you can pay them forward to the next lucky recipient).

If you want to read a really great book, that is extremely romantic, but not in the man/woman sense, more in the “ideals of a girl” sense, you should read a book that I read when I was about 11 years old the first time (and have read it many times over the years) a book written by Julie Andrews (Edwards) yes- Mary Poppins herself, about a young girl living in an orphanage in England. The book is called Mandy and it is one of my most treasured books that I have ever read.

Kathleen Givens writes Scottish historical romance, and she’s really got her political plotlines and historical details down. I read her books back in high school. My writing class had to interview writers that we aspired to be like. I wanted to be a novelist, and my teacher knew Kathleen. Diana Gabaldon also writes Scottish historical romance, but with a sci-fi bent.

Over the summer I read Talyn by Holly Lisle. It’s a fantasy novel, but Holly has done romance too, and it definitely shows. One of the best romantic plots I’ve read. I honestly don’t like pure romance novels, but I appreciate a well-written romantic plot when there’s other material too.

Oh yeah, and watch the movie version of Northanger Abbey that came out last year on PBS. It captures the humor of the book, but it moves along better at the beginning.
