How did the 5 pointed shape of what we call a star come to be?

Asked by xacrox (243points) April 13th, 2008 from iPhone

stars are bright shiny objects in the sky they have no points. Who invented the star symbol? And who decided to associate it with stars?

I believe it had something to do with a kid with a lot of time and a spirograph.

The pentagram (or, “star”) is a shape that exists in nature, as in starfish, arrangement of seeds inside fruit, etc. So I wouldn’t say anyone other than Mother Nature invented the shape. I think the pentagram became associated with astronomical stars because when stars twinkle, they project rays of light that form a star-like shape.

I think it was invented by some grade school teacher!

@peedub—An excellent article on the Star shape, but nothing about why it is associated with an actual star.—That’s a good question, to me, stars look like round circles with four or more rays of light, more like a +.
