Whats a good dress for a guest to wear to a Sweet 16?

Asked by NostalgicChills (2787points) February 2nd, 2011

I’m going to a sweet sixteen in about a month, and wanted to know if anyone has suggestions for what a guest should wear. I prefer with straps and NOT a short dress.
Thank you! :D

Maybe something like this This particular dress was from This Next (I saw it online, but you could look for something similar wherever you like to shop). I think I would pick a different color, maybe red or pink or lime.

Or this which is Isaac Mizrahi from Target.

Or this I saw this one on a blog, so I’m not sure where it’s from, but I’ve seen things like this in most of the regular stores that sell dresses for teens.

Or this I saw this one on ioffer.com.

Or this one also seen on ioffer.com

Or this one which I saw on watchmojo.com

Go through some magazines like 17 and cut out some pictures of dresses that you like so you can take them to the stores that you like to shop and ask the clerk to show you something similar. You might also enjoy going out to some thrift stores, they often have a nice supply of party dresses (some really cool vintage ones) that you might like, or even try David’s Bridal. Have fun!

It depends on how formal the event is going to be. For example, is it in her house, or a restaurant, or a catering hall? Some settings are more casual than others.

I have to agree with @answerjill. The answer completely depends on what type of sweet 16 party your host is having. For instance, my daughter had a murder mystery dinner party with a 1920s theme. And if it’s a picnic, you’re going to feel pretty darn overdressed if you assume fancy is the way to go. I think we need more details.

It is going to be at a hall, and has the same kind of theme as a high school dance.
I hope that helps! I don’t know any other way to describe it.

Thanks. OK, so it sounds like it is on the fancier side…I’m afraid that I don’t know much about what teenagers are wearing these days—and I wasn’t stylish when I was your age! If you want something long and not strapless, maybe you want to go with a vintage style dress? You might be able to find one at a thrift or consignment store, if you don’t mind used clothing. I’d like to encourage some teenagers to get on this question and help you out!
