If it wasn't for _____, I don't know where I'd be today?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) February 11th, 2011

Fill in the blank! If it wasn’t for one thing in particular maybe you could just write off your current success, or maybe your current predicament.

What was that one thing that changed the game?

A certain movie I seen in 1977….... made me focus like a laser on what my career choice will be. I was 8 at that time.

Atheism lol. I’m just kidding, kind of. I think I’ll say my mother and her hard work, I grew up in a good place and had a decent upbringing.

My husband. With the things we’ve gone through and he still stands next to me and actually wants to be there with me, he’s the one constant in my life.

My children, too; however, I know if it wasn’t for my husband, I would have thrown in the towel not too long ago.

My grandparents. They took me in when I was a punk little 9 year old then put up with me through my hellish adolescent years. They were my saving grace, without them I would have been a ward of the state. They always said I kept them young….

GPS technology. Last week I got very lost coming out of a furniture store in Holland. I’m sure by now I would have asked for directions, but the TomTom helped prevent the need for any further human interaction.

If it wasn’t for my mother, I really don’t know where I’d be now – One thing I do know is that I certainly wouldn’t be leading the wonderful life I have now.

My grandfather. He found out that bad things happening to me in my birth mother’s house with her husband and his brother, and he did something about it. If he hadn’t, I’d not be here, for sure.

My life has changed so often because of so many different people and events.

My brother encouraged me to emigrate.
My sister encouraged me to study. These were both very spur of the moment decisions.

An english teacher called Peter who believed in me and made me believe.

A lecturer at uni who didn’t let me off with “am I too old to do this?” or “is there any point me doing this?”.

My father used to call me a butterfly and this I suppose has driven me to learn to complete tasks, including my PhD. In the back of my mind was, “I must finish this for my dad”.

My children changed my life and the decisions I have made.

I think life is a journey and along the way many opportunities are presented along with a whole host of obstacles. We decide which ones will either stop us, encourage us to carry on or lead us to take a detour. It is a fascinating journey is it not?

If it wasn’t for my wonderful grandfather I would not be here to tell my story , he found my sister and I in a crib which we had been in for almost two weeks , where my real mother had adbandoned us .
I almost died and my grandfather had the casket at the hospital where I was fighting for my life, I was less than six months old.

My parents-they sacrificed so that I could go to college. They instilled me with good values. They gave me security to venture out in the world.

Modern Medicine-without it, I would be dead 2 times over.

My best friend, who helped lift me out of suicidal depression and convinced me to come out as transsexual to my partner. Without his encouragement I’d either still be closeted, or I’d be dead.

FUCK IT ATTITUDE. I finally got tired of going by the rules and coming up short. So I began to look at things differently. Screw the rules, screw policies do the damn job. I was told I was going to die young. I was made to feel that I had no choice. Well, I’ll be turning 59 in a couple of weeks. I chose this line of defense: “I’LL GO WHEN I’M DAMN GOOD AND READY.”
