Is it safe to take an Aveo on a 500 miles each way trip?

Asked by YARNLADY (46379points) February 12th, 2011

I say no, but my adult grandsons want to drive home for a long weekend. We bought the car for going to work and back only.

Why wouldn’t it be safe? As long as the car is well-maintained, it’ll be fine.

Katawagrey has taken her Honda Fit (comparable to an Aveo) on long road trips (1000 mi each way) a couple of times and been fine. Because it’s so short coupled it’s not the most comfortable car for distance driving, but it should be fine.

As long as it’s been properly maintained, there should be no problem. Treat it like you would any car before a road trip: change the oil and have it inspected (even Jiffy Lube should be able to do a quick inspection and let you know if there’s anything worth worrying about). Otherwise, hope they have a good drive.

What is the point of a car if you can’t drive a thousand miles in a small amount of time if you need to?

I would think that one of the drawbacks would be that the car gets 14 miles to the gallon. It’s going to take them 71 gallons of gas to drive 1000 miles round trip. That’s about $200 in gas. A car that gets 24 miles to the gallon would cost about $120 for the trip. They can rent a more reliable car for the weekend for $80 or less and save the wear-and-tear on their car.

@BarnacleBill : My friend’s Aveo gets about 25 MPG in the city and up to 32 highway. I think you’re thinking of another model.

@BarnacleBill Our printout on the Aveo says 35 MPG on the highway. I’ll ask them to keep close tract, so we can find out what ours takes.
