How to use wordpress as a CMS, building a product catalog?

Asked by manuel_alarcon (299points) February 16th, 2011

Hi, Im building a site in WP. The goal is to have a structure such as “www.fake-enterprise.com/products/bikes/brand/item”, as a product catalogue. To do so, I defined nested categories, and organized the product types into pages, with their own template each type. I had a page file to display types (bikes, tools, etc), another for subtypes (accesories, spare parts), and then a single file to display the item, but I never got this last one working. So, changed to Custom Type Posts, defining a “Products” type, with a customized taxonomy. I tried linking categories to it, nothing. later with hierarchical C.T.Posts, later giving taxonomies to each one, and can’t seem to find a way to reach my goal. I’ve tried the structure, programming, and installing plugins. Can anybody help me? I think I’m so close, maybe missed the right way several times by little…

I forgot to add, when I started, I put the product types as pages so i can easily merge the products with other pages (like The Company, Info, Distributors, Contact, and so on). So, I created 6 pages with their own templates (bikes, boxes, racks, etc) and within the page, a custom query filtering the items of that type so i can group items of that type; with php code like “in template bikes.php, query for those posts where their category being bikes and their tag being subproducts”... maybe this was right from the beginning… but i dont know…
