Was there ever a medical school that taught pregnancy as a 'disease'?

If so when and where was that?

I doubt it, but you know this is a good way rumors start.

only disorders/complications of pregnancy

On Dr. Oz’s show a few days ago, did a guest Dr. say that she was taught in North America, that pregnancy itself as a disease? If so, it sounds so unbelievable to me it is not even funny.

@flo : Well, I didn’t see it, but you could always go to the site and find out for yourself and then get back to us. I highly doubt that they meant it literally, though.

I don’t know if it is taught as a disease, but it is treated as a disease as opposed to being a natural process.

I’m not sure if I know exactly what you’re refering to, but I’ve heard about people using the definition of a parasite in not-so-great jokes—something like “an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species, known as the host, from the body of which it obtains nutriment.” dictionary.com—to describe the fetus (which works because, strictly speaking, the definition fits…)
And in that way fetus—parasite—disease?

Its taught as a condition. Is that what you’re talking about?

I think @blueiiznh has got it right. I doubt very highly anyone ever called it a disease in a serious way, but that is how it is treated in our society. Side note: For me, it actually was much like a disease, and could have killed me.

@DancingMind I believe Dr. House has informed patients of their pregnancy by telling them they have a parasite growing inside them.
“Don’t worry. Many women learn to embrace this parasite. They name it, dress it up in tiny clothes, arrange playdates with other parasites. ”

However, I don’t know of any real medical professionals who teach pregnancy as an infestation or disease of any sort.

@ParaParaYukiko oh! no! I didn’t mean any real doctors—people with a twisted sense of humor (which House does… I think I remember seeing that show. Maybe that’s where people got it from?)

I also don’t think any medical professionals think of pregnancy as a disease, but it definitely can be overmedicalized. Does every laboring woman need invasive fetal monitoring? Probably not, but you can be darned sure if there is a bad outcome, some lawyer will nail an obstetrician who doesn’t order such treatment.

I wish I had added the tags“TV” and “D. Oz”. I was hoping people who saw the espiode or who want to verify it for themselves, would respond as well.
I agree with @ParaParaYukiko “However, I don’t know of any real medical professionals who teach pregnancy as an infestation or disease of any sort.” Yes it is just so preposterous. And Dr. Oz supposedly just allowed it to slide, no hint of suprise. I simply don’t believe in North America in the mid 1900’s..

…or at any time in the past actually.

@klutzaroo No not a condition, that would be accurate. It is a show within the last 10 days max.
The word “disease” having been associated with pregnancy in medical schools, doesn’t compute in my head no way no how. I don’t think it is credible. I am searching for the episode in Dr. Oz site.
