Anyone have any experience with selling plasma?

Asked by global_nomad (1906points) February 20th, 2011

Well, you know you’re a college student when…You seriously consider selling plasma for some cash. This isn’t something I really think I want to do (or could do for that matter) but I am curious as to what the experience feels like. I’m not sure I could handle the whole blood being circulated back into your body thing. Does it feel weird/gross/uncomfortable? Does it hurt? How much do you really get paid after one session? Do you have to do more than one session? I read somewhere that once you got started you were kind of expected (but not forced) to come back in a month later. Any information about the procedure is appreciated!

I did this for cash as a college student almost a decade ago. I think I got $20 (cash) per donation and could donate 2x a week. An extra $160 a month as a college student goes a long way.
I remember that I would have to get weighed and have my temperature taken before donating. There was always a long wait, and the waiting room was filled with college kids and people who looked like they were homeless or a step away from it.
The actual procedure isn’t that bad. It feels like donating blood, except the blood that gets circulated back feels a little cold. No biggie.

I haven’t done it, but I went to check it out a couple years ago. I remember that you were more or less required to go back a few days after your first visit. For some reason, I wish I could remember why, they could only use the donated plasma if they got a second batch from the same person within a certain amount of time. Thus, you got paid more for the second visit each week than for the first.

Be sure to read all the literature they give you. I declined after I read it, because it said long term use can deplete the calcium in your body. It also said that some people experience a burning sensation from the saline they use to re-introduce the blood.
