Can I get rid of tonsilitis on my own and how ?

Asked by Truth_and_Freedom (122points) February 20th, 2011

I’ve had tonsillitis for about 2 days now, along with a headache, trouble swallowing, swollen tonsil, etc, basically all the signs and symptoms of tonsillitis.

Will tonsillitis go away on it’s own ?

Can I just wait for it to go away and heal by itself ? I’ve been taking ibuprofen 800.

Could leaving it alone lead to something serious ?

I also have one wisdom tooth coming out for 2 days which is how long the tonsillitis popped up for. This is really annoying.

Hopefully I can see a doc tomorrow but I’m wondering if anything can be done to make the pain less right now ?

I heard aloe vera helps ? And drinking water ?

Sometimes having a wisdom tooth coming through can make you get sick with other things (like the tonsillitis)...2 days is probably OK for tonsillitis so don’t worry too much if you can get into the docs tomorrow. You wont be able to make it go away on its own – it will either need to run its course or you get some help from the doctor but there’s some things you can do to ease it. Try sucking ice-cubes or eating gelato which will soothe your throat (milk based ice cream won’t help – it needs to be fruit/water based). I have gargled with salt water before which is pretty gross (don’t swallow), but it helps for a while. You can get anaesthetic strepsils from the pharmacy too. Get well soon!

I agree with gargling with salt water. Take some Tylenol or Advil for the pain, stay hydrated.

Tea with honey and lemon is soothing. A hot shower or a tea kettle that will puff out steam might give you some temporary relief. Throat lozenges or hard candy will also help.

You could have strep throat. The doc. will take a throat culture. If positive, he will give you an antibiotic.

Eventually, if you really have chronic tonsillitis, you might have to have your tonsils removed.

I had chronic tonsillitis and eventually had to get them removed (at 19 years of age). Before I had them removed the only thing that seemed to help was gargling salt water. But that only helped a bit. I had to just suffer though.
