I need a private photo-sharing website or program...suggestions?

Asked by jgrissett (468points) February 22nd, 2011

I work for a non-proft organization and we want to share some photos with the members of our Forum. Due to copyright issues, I want to find a website or program that can create a photo album that is private to the public but can be accessed through a link posted on the forum. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Picasa through google; you can set privacy settings and also allow certain people access.

Flickr.com

Shutterfly.com

Photobucket.com

There’s so many. Even MySpace and Facebook can do what you want.

I never ever recommend Picasa. They are owned by Google and there are copyright issues surrounding how they store and rename images, stripping meta data off.

I use Webshots to host private images in galleries for an organization I am in.

I think with photobucket you can create an album with a password, and then give the password to people along with the link and then only they will be able to see the photos.

You can’t really do that with Flickr….you would have to make the photos viewable by “Friends Only” then every person would have to have an account and be added as one of your friends which seems like a huge hassle.

Imgur is a simple site to share images publicly or privately.

Imgur.com is definitely the best by far.

I’ve looked at flickr and that isn’t what I want. i can check out photobucket some more. what about dropbox or mediafire? my only doubt with these sites is that they are more than what i need.

Another good option would be http://www.min.us

To @deni‘s point… every person MUST have an account on whatever service @jgrissett ultimately chooses so as to enforce private viewing of photos.

Private == identity known == having an account.

The key decision would be if people must pay to have an account. I think most suggestions made so far allow for free accounts with reasonable constraints.

@jgrissett, I use Dropbox all the time… it’s especially great if you think you’ll have more than just photos to share. I like that it’s free, upload/download is SSL protected, data on their servers 256-bit encrypted (even they cannot see inside), it runs on every major desktop and mobile OS, and you can, of course, create public and private folders to control who can see what. Dropbox features.
