How do I stop my leather jacket from smelling?

I’d wash it with Woolite (with a cloth by hand)...rinse well and wipe it down with a polish for leather. That ought to do it. Don’t you wonder what the store smelled like?

You can’t treat fake leather in the same way as real leather. Try wiping it with baby wipes. Maybe fabreeze the liner inside the jacket. I think fake leather is essentially plastic, I’d avoid putting it in the washer or dryer.

Oh no…. @sarahjane90 by fabreezing the liner do you mean, I should spray the inside with fabreeze?

I’d turn it inside out and spray the inside with Febreze, and if that doesn’t work, take it to the cleaner’s and explain the problem. They should be able to deal with it.

Does your jacket smell like mold? If so, you are going to need a different approach to removing the smell.

@john65pennington is heading in the right direction. Hang it outside in the sun for several days. You’re smelling the chemicals from the plastic. Sun takes a lot of smells out of things; lemon juice and sunshine is good for mold.

What does the laundry/care tag say about how to care for the garment?

The smell is either coming from the faux leather, the lining, or it has absorbed a smell from something else. Hang it outside in the Sun (if you are lucky enough to have sun right now), then do it again inside out. If it still smells, try the fabreeze, or a cleaning wipe, like you would use on a baby’s bottom.

Of course, possibly instead of buying a Cecil Coat your Mom got a Cecil Coat

If you don’t have sunshine, this is a trick I use for getting odors out of non-washable fabrics:

Put the garment on a hanger and place a large garbage bag over it, pushing just the top of the hanger out of the sealed end of the bag.

Get some activated charcoal deodorizers at a tobacco store or in the automotive aisle at Target (they’re meant to rid cars of smoke odors), pop them into the open end of the bag and close it up with a rubber band – or knot – so the deodorizers will sit under the garment without touching it.

Hang it somewhere for a few days.

just wrap it in newpaper, it’s a great way to remove odours from faux leather jacket, I have one also and it works.
