DVR users, are you constantly developing your ninja skills?

Asked by markferg (1882points) February 26th, 2011

I have a DVR system and I love the way I can fast forward past the adverts. Sometimes I’m ‘in the zone’ and can judge the end of the adverts really well. Sometimes I just can’t seem to get it right. Are the TV stations fighting back, putting hidden cues that make you THINK the adverts are done, and then putting something like a preview of another program and then a couple of more ads in? Or, am I just having a bad day with my DVR ninja skills?

It really seems like it, doesn’t it? It’s so frustrating to think you’ve got the right moment, but then you realize that there are more ads coming. My remote has a skip back button, which skips back 8 seconds, so it’s not so bad.

It is intermittent reinforcement—very powerful. I love it when I hit it right on.

The sad thing is when I attempt to fast forward through the advertisements when I am watching a show in real time.

I don’t have a DVR, but back when it was just muting in real time or fast forwarding through tapes (I had every episode of Charmed as a teen, thank you very much) I was Queen. Now, yes, I find them to be putting in some of those “ques” – like the ad for a show on that network – about ¾ of the way through so they trick you.

It’s just like parallel parking—at least three tries.

Ive gotten really good at just fast forwarding a bit into the show and quickly hitting the rewind a couple seconds button to land me at the start of the show.

@uberbatman Me too

So I guess my ninja skills are at a black belt level. This has crippled me because I refuse to watch commercials now. I would rather watch a show later than it comes on than watch commercials. man that’s bad

@dreamer31 I do the same exact thing :)

@uberbatman LOL that is funny, I even know that if I start watching the show anytime after 28 min on a 1hr show I can avoid all the commercials. How’s that for a ninja skills?
