How do I keep up the color in my roots?

Asked by ivysaurgoesrawr (106points) March 6th, 2011

My hair is dyed red but is naturally very dark brown and grows out fast. There’s several layers of dye on my lengths so, even using the same dye as I did to dye my hair most recently the roots would still be so much darker. I don’t know how to keep up the color in my roots, tips?

Oh – I thought this was a question about retaining one’s ethnicity. For hair roots, I would consult a beautician. I know mine leaves the new color on the roots longer and then pulls it through to the ends for the last few minutes to even out the coloration.

You could try Root Touch Up. It’s supposed to match the color no matter what.

A mans answer here. My neighbor is a licensed hair stylist. She states that any qualified hair stylist can solve your problem, with the right chemicals.

Keeping that red is gonna cost you.

I have dark hair that I get colored red. My stylist uses a special lightening agent on my roots. You can’t expect to put light color over dark hair and have it show up the same as on light hair.

Bleach the fool out of your hair then dye it with whatever color you want. It’ll make your hair feel crappy for a while, but after a few cuts and some Keratin treatment, it’ll be amazing.

Usually it’ll just kinda blend in. Hair gets lighter from a bit of loosing dye, but mostly being exposed to sun. So the further down you go, the lighter it is. This is natural for all hair, dyed or not. So when you dye your roots, and they look darker, they’ll be indistinguishable from the inch after your roots, which is where it matters. (Does this make any sense?)

Get GreyFree! We sell it at the beauty store I work at and it works great!!
It’s like a colored mascara for your hair, washes off when you shampoo and you can use it on your roots, facial hair, not that you have any, and eyebrows!

And, unlike bleaching, coloring over and over, and constantly fussing with your roots it wont damage your hair AT ALL!
