Is it normal to get gray hair in your twenties? Is it a one-time thing or a sign of more to come?

Asked by lostinyoureyes (1121points) March 7th, 2011

I’m 22 and just found my first strand of gray hair. (Sob) It’s actually half white and half black because it started to gray midway. I am scared; my dad started to gray in his 20s and now is almost all white in its mid-50s.

Could this just be a one-time thing, or is it a sign of many more grays in the near future?

Yeah. I got my first when I was 20, my aunt got her first when she was 17.

I think it’s different for everyone. Some people get premature grey hair.

But look at people like George Clooney – it’s workin’ for him, and he looks as sexy as hell.
ahem.

Yes, it is common.

Please don’t sob, it’s just hair. Gray hair can be sexy if you let it. A confident two gray haired person is more attractive than an insecure no gray haired person.

I got my first gray hair when I was only 18. By the time I was 40 I had more gray than anything else.

I was 16 when I got my first gray hair. My grandmother was completely white by her mid twenties. It happens. No big deal, honest.

LOL, I got my first gray hair when I was in 7th grade. It was traumatizing! But I can’t do anything about it. However, even though I sprouted my first gray at 13, I’m happy to say that at 30, my hair is still mostly black. :)

I think young people with grey hair look really interesting and beautiful.

I started getting my first greys at the grand old age of 14–15, and now on my way towards the end of my 40’s I’m still mostly a brunette but with way more greys, very noticeable now but it bothers me zero. An old saying states that “your hair will never go a colour that doesn’t suit you.” Tis true that is. I’ll bet that you’re the only one who has noticed, put it out of your mind honey, it’s not worth worrying about, honest.

I got my first in 6th grade. I have quite a lot, now (I’m 43), but didn’t really start to go noticeably grey until my mid thirties.

If your dad (or mom ) has early grey/white hair, then you have a good chance of getting it too.
Don’t worry about it.

I found my first white hair at the age of 10.
By my mid twenties I had more white hair than dark.
I was all white by the time I was 35.

It hasn’t slowed me down any.
By the way it hasn’t slowed down my love life any either.

Normal? Absolutely! My mother started turning salt-and-pepper in her 20s. I was an adult before I knew she dyed it brunette. My first grey strands started showing up in my early 30s.

I found my first grey when I was 20. I’m 30 now, and I have quite a few greys around my temples and on the crown of my head. I dye my hair anyway and have been for years (I’m not a fan of my natural colour and like to change things up fairly often), but recently I’ve been able to notice the greys more easily as my roots come in. :(

My dad’s hair is almost completely white – he looks like Steve Martin :) I blame it on him, because my mom is nearly 60 and has very little grey.

You can’t change your genetic makeup, but you can color your hair if it really bothers you. As you can tell from all the responses, you’re not the only one. And if it goes white early, as your dad’s did, don’t forget that white and platinum blond are pretty much the same thing. Revel in it!
