Do you have any remedies for clearing up a cold sooner?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) March 8th, 2011

So, I’m going on my third week of being sick. It’s not the kind of sick that I need to go to the doctor for, but I can’t just stay home and rest either. My school has this lovely little mandatory attendance policy… So, I’m turning to the collective to see if you have some odd or little-known remedies for clearing up a cold.

My symptoms are:
-Seriously stuffy nose
-Muscle aches
-Coughing
-Hurt throat though I suspect this is because I’ve been coughing for almost three weeks.

So, can you help me? Anything would be appreciated.

Please do not just tell me to just go to the doctor. It would be silly to go to the doctor and have them tell me that I have a cold and that I just need to rest.

There are those lovely mint throat bonbons that you should be able to buy at any supermarket. Those should help. Or tea with honey.

Get very, very drunk. Wake up with a hangover tomorrow; when it clears your cold will be gone. Seriously.

2 plus weeks is too long for a cold. But are you taking zinc? (I use Zicam). And are you having a lot of clear soups? Getting sufficient rest?

My standard recommendation is Hot and Sour soup, or Tom Guy. It helps with the sinuses and the throat.

But this long with a cold you should see a Doctor to check for bronchitis or pneumonia.

@zenvelo: I’m actually on my second cold. I was getting better and then this slammed into me Sunday night. I may have to go to the doctor if I don’t get better soon but I’d really like to avoid that. This bug has just been circling campus for the past month or so. :(

@KatawaGrey Well then my treatments stand. I always preach Zicam and Tom Guy.

@zenvelo: What exactly is Tom Guy? And thank you, I think I will pick up some Zicam when I’m out and about going to school today. grumblegrumble.

Maybe this site could help you. Lots of information on it.

Also honey and lemon is very good for a sore throat.

Gargle with 50/50 warm water and vinegar 2–3 times a day. Sore throat will be gone in 2 days max and your cold will clear up very quickly. It’s gross, but not as gross as a 3 week long cold. Drink lots of water too! Nobody listens when I tell them to do this either. It works is all I can say. I do vinegar full strength no messin around…can’t afford to be sick.

@Cruiser: Holy crap! That sounds like a weird and awesome remedy! Hot damn, I’m gonna go buy myself some zicam, gargle with vinegar and pour hydrogen peroxide in my ears!

You can also gargle with salt and water. That helps a little. Chicken soup is also a good thing for the throat. My all time best is lots of sleep. Sorry that doesn’t fit your schedule now.

@Adirondackwannabe: I’ve heard that works too. If I’m not better in a couple days, I’m going to track you all down and sneeze on you.~

Do you have a temperature? It kinda sounds like the flu.

bkcunningham's avatar

You may have allergies. What particular muscles are aching? Could the muscle aches be from coughing? Have you taken your temperature?

@KatawaGrey I left out the steam pressure washer bath to blast away any germies or you could take a Silkwood Shower. 15 minutes of sunbathing is part of my cold regimen too!

Apparently, swabbing your ears and the very inside of your nose with hydrogen peroxide on a q-tip is supposed to limit either the duration or else the severity of colds.

@KatawaGrey WHOOPS! My bad. I meant Tom Yum, Thai hot and sour soup with chicken or shrimp.

I have some mental block against getting Thai food names right.

Do you have a juicer? If so, here is my recipe:

½” slice of Ginger
2 Carrots
½ apple

Drink the above 3 to 4 times per day.

No juicer? Drink ginger tea. This recipe is close to mine

Drink LOTS of water (during my bad bronchial infection, I’ve been carrying a Fiji water everywhere I go)

This won’t help you get rid of the cold, but will help you get through your days more pain free: _ to ease the pain from the stuffiness and the throat_ take ibuprofen. If you need to get through something important take 3 (not two as the bottle states).

At night, my favorite thing to take is Tylenol Sore Throat to the recalls the “tylenol” one is often sold out. But, Walgreens has their own versions (as do other companies) of this AM, PM & maximum strength medicine. They work well and help you get a better night’s rest minus the pain.

<<<TMI ALERT>>>I am susceptible to respiratory infections. If you have phlegm or mucus coming out in more than one color——GET to the doctor or to a local RN clinic at a pharmacy. You will need antibiotics to clear up the infection.

Hope you get better soon :)

I highly recommend a Chinese herbal remedy called yin chiao. You can get it at most health food stores.

Malama pono (take care), my friend.
