Do you refrigerate popcorn?

Asked by 12Oaks (4051points) March 12th, 2011

I’m talking about unpopped, still in the jar. Some refrigerate, some don’t. Seems to be 2 schools of thought on this. I do refrigerate, as it seems to pop better and the salt to stick and not make its way to the bottom of the bowl. I eat about a bowl of popcorn every day, so this is something very near and dear to my heart.

Oh, and I do realize that the popcorn mafia or lobby or institute or whatever they call themselves official stance on this is no refrigeration, period. But sometimes manufacturers and the like are wrong, just ask the creators of Pop Rocks.

So how about some input…. Cold or room temperature?

I keep mine in the freezer. But I buy the bags. It makes a good ice pack if you need one, and I find I get fewer old maids.

I don’t keep popcorn around the house (I do have a few microwave bags, but not the real stuff). When I was a kid, though, the popcorn was always kept in the freezer.

I keep an opened can of coffee in the fridge. It stays fresh much longer, than leaving it out on the countertop.

With popcorn, it’s a toss up. I can only think that the fridge would add mositure content to the uncooked popcorn, thus taking a longer time to pop.

I have never refrigerated popcorn, but that’s because it’s not around long enough.

I eat sssssssooooooooooooooo much popcorn. I’ve never put it in the fridge or freezer and I’ve never had a problem, so until I do, nope.

I freeze it and nibble the frozen butter off the block of kernels. Corncicles ROCK!
