If you were a vegetarian?

Asked by amandaafoote (865points) April 17th, 2008

would eating chicken flavoring in ramen soup be wrong? or no because it’s just flavoring and not the meat?

Strictly speaking, as long as the flavouring doesn’t contain any animal products (which they usually don’t), it’d be quite ok.
But then, many people are vegetarian because they don’t like the taste of meat, in which case they probably wouldn’t want chicken flavour.

It depends on the type of vegetarian. I know some people who would say no, where as I have a friend who is vegan, but eats sea food. She claims to be vegan for the health aspect. I don’t much understand but hey, to each his own.

I would have to agree with wildflower, so long as their are absolutely NO animal byproducts in the food what so ever, you should be okay.

My vegetarian friend won’t eat ramen cause its chicken flavor, if it has gelatin in it, which i’m not sure if it does or not, gelatin is made of animal bones, but thats vegan stuff, not vegetarian stuff, unless you’re into that.

wildflower is incorrect. chicken flavoring, beef flavoring, these flavorings almost always have animal products in them. In fact, almost all ramen noodle soups have animal products in them, even those that don’t seem to (like the “oriental” flavor).

this doesn’t exactly answer your question, but you should know that chicken flavoring almost always means some chicken.

my veg friend won’t eat it because she says it does contain animal products

To note: not all gelatin is made of animal bones. Algae is used for a lot of it.

@delirium, thanks, i dont really know much about that stuff, but my one friend told me that one time, i just figured she was correct. sorry for the mix up.

Haha, no problem. Its a common misconception.

I’m a vegetarian, and if the ingredients say any animal flavoring, I’ll pass. From a personal preference point of reference, I don’t eat ramen noodles because of how they taste, i.e., very salty and sometimes also have MSG which gives a mad migraine.

My girl has a case of chicken ramen. I’m vegan, I wouldn’t eat chicken flavoring. I use a cube of veggie broth for my ramen and save the packs for her.
