RPG creating software?

I can’t run RPGMaker with my set up, so any decent alternatives to that program? I am not really looking for anything specific I just wanted to make a cool game for a sick friend. You know of anything like RPGmaker that is free and optimized for a Windows 7 computer???

Which version of RPG Maker decided to not run? I’ve tried a few, but most pale in comparison and the others I forget at the moment because I still use RPG Maker on my Win7 box. I’ll see if I can find the others…

I tried the Vx (newest one) and it still needed virtual PC XP mode which I cannot run. I have it on PS2 but my friend is incapable of holding a PS2 controller and doesn’t have one anyway. I am looking around but I can’t seem to find anything right now.

Funny. I run XP (one of the older versions) under Win7 Home Premium without any sort of Virtual Machine or emulator :/
