What happens when looking at the sun with 3D glasses?

Asked by XYZZYtja (233points) March 23rd, 2011

So, I have this basic red/blue 3D glasses, the cheap one. And it says that you should not look in the sun with it. What will I see and what will happen with my eyes if I do so? (Please dont test it out, there must be a reason why you aren’t allowed)

I think the idea is that they don’t offer protection from the sun… and you shouldn’t be looking directly at the sun, anyhow. They don’t want people mistaking them for sunglasses.

hmm, that would be a very very easy answer… I thought of something like left eye and right eye getting different colors from the sun which may affect your looking with both eyes simultaniously, altought, im not for sure what the real reason is, could be what you are saying but I want some to the point answers,

What happens when looking at the sun with 3D glasses?

Depending on how long you look directly at the sun, you will burn your retinas.

My guess is that you cause permanent damage to both of your eyes.

<~ Just ask Walter. Seems like he’s having a good time.

You will burn out your retinas and go blind forever.

Now then, you can buy 3D Sunglasses

Again, to anyone reading this: If you look directly at the sun, you can burn your retinas

Most people do not notice the damage until they are older.

As everybody says above, DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN YOU CAN WRECK YOUR EYESIGHT!

However, You can make a projector, throwing a live image of the sun on a screen or piece of paper, and you can look at the image.

The projector can be as simple as a pinhole in a piece of cardboard or foil.

Here are instructions for a deluxe model, with binoculars. Link

For a super-deluxe telescope view of the sun, see NASA’s Best of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) gallery

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITH THE BINOCULARS OR WITH YOUR OWN EYES!!

It will look like blindness is rushing right at you!

It has nothing to do with left eye right eye… it is much simpler than that, and I can’t believe I have to explain this. The light and brightness of the sun’s light is so much that looking at the sun with those glasses on is no more protection than if you were looking at the sun without glasses at all, almost.

Nope… I can’t hillbilly my explanation without sounding like a moron…. sorry for sounding like a moron..

If you wear 3D glasses in everyday life everything goes all 3d, it’s super cool!

I actually did this when I was younger. What happened was the colors were burned into my retinas. Now I see a light shade of red and blue in each eye.
