I don’t think so, no. How could a desire for information ever be a stupid thing, regardless of the subject matter?

I’ve always thought that the whole point of saying that “there is no stupid questions” was to encourage people to ask questions and to inspire curiosity. And in that sense, I don’t think there is.

The only stupid question might be one that was just asked previously and the person asking didn’t pay attention. I am thinking in the context of a class.

Oh yeah. Look through the archives on Fluther. There are a lot of stupid questions. Just look under the frizzer.

Generally no, even if the answer is right in front of someone, because they could be very distracted.

However, would “How do I post an answer to this question?” be considered a stupid question, if it was in direct reference to this question?

I’m not asserting that would necessarily be a stupid question, but I’d like to know how someone could post an answer and not know how they did it, unless it was something caused by having no short-term memory.

I often wonder about people who ask “How do I ask a question on this thing?”

Electra's avatar

Not really. The stupidity happens when the person who asked a question refuses to be enlightened by the answer to the question and starts to sling hatred and verbal mud.

If you read Yahoo Answers often enough you will realise that yes, there are truly LOTS of stupid questions.

Yes, there are indeed stupid questions out there. It reminds me that common sense is no longer so common anymore.

Questions one would deem stupid are not necessarily stupid questions. The basis of how someone would see the question is all based on their perception of it. For instance, The person asking the question might not realize the answer, but the person answering it might have seen the question (or heard it) a quite a few times and might quite tired of seeing the question.

There are stupid questions. Questions that are quite obvious but asked in true spirit of gaining info are not stupid. Asking a question which is evident to all like _“what color is the daytime sky?” or “If I buy a soda and shake it will it fizz all over the place?” those IMO are stupid questions.

It depends on who is asking, who is being asked, and why the question is being asked. The only questions I can think of that are stupid in themselves are those where the question itself makes no logical sense, and a satisfactory answer cannot be given – for example, ‘If a centaur ate a page of War and Peace, would it grow antlers?’

@Hypocrisy_Central Those questions aren’t stupid at all, if asked by a young child. Questions are stupid or otherwise based on context – I don’t think you can simply state that a particular question is stupid in isolation from its context.

@AstroChuck I should know this by now, but what is the ‘frizzer’?

filmfann's avatar

I didn’t think so until now.

I was told the only stupid question is the one not asked.

bolwerk's avatar

Nope. Only stupid people.

I don’t think there are any stupid questions. There are poorly phrased questions (e.g., frizzer), and there are questions asked for bad reasons (e.g., laziness), but no stupid questions.

Yes. Oh, yes. Absolutely. Yes, yes, yes.

Some people feel compelled to assert otherwise for various reasons, and I admire their conviction but simply cannot agree. I have seen and heard far too many stupid questions to deny their existence.

I used to have a boyfriend who would say, “There is no such thing as a stupid question, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.” I’m inclined to agree with him.

Of course, there are stupid questions!! How can anyone not think so?
