What do you do with your old phone jacks?

Asked by mowens (8403points) March 30th, 2011

They are ugly and no one uses phones anymore.

What can you do with them?

What did you have in mind? Selling them on ebay?
You could remove the plate if it is a newer house with RJ-11, than put a blank plate over the junction box. If you plan on “plastering over them” you should remove the wires from the studs and walls first.

Hahaha no they just look ugly. What can I cover them up with? A plate would be ugly too.

The best way is remove all the cable ( with box ) and get a piece of wallboard cut to fit in the whole. Plaster it all up… and when selling the house and a person is going to buy it but finds out it will take a licensed electrician a hundred hours at $85/ hours to rewire.

No Sale ! !

I use phones. Landlines are handy when you’ve left your portables about and their batteries are dead. Ditto with cell phones. I’m just contemplating taking off the last jack that I never ran line to.

I dunno—a bunch of them made into a tech-vest? [I’m talking the insides here, not the boring cover]
use a pair for tecchy earrings—with little coils of the 4 different colors of wire hanging off the leads?

But, if you don’t use them, just take them off what is the big deal here?

We got rid of ours. But while pulling out the phone lines I pulled Ethernet since I could tape the the CAT 5 to the old phone wires and just pull to run the new wire. Now a bunch of rooms have a wired internet connection that runs into a router.

I have a couple around still, I can experience a lot of power outtages in my area so I keep an old plug in Trimline phone for this reason.

Cell phone reception is completely dead in my canyon sooo, no help there.

Still a place for phone jacks on my mountain. lol

You are incorrect. There are many people who are knowledgeable enough to understand the advantages of land line phones. You sound stupid by saying “no one uses phones anymore.” There’s a big world out here full of people doing things differently than you. If you have an oz of intelligence you will leave any phone jacks in your home just like they are.

If you think they look ugly you might want to remove all of your electrical and
CATV outlets too. Then you can have a lovely, dark, quiet house.

I like @math_nerd‘s answer. Of course there’s always the fact that there’s a little bit of power running through those. Too bad it’s not enough to charge a cell phone.

@perspicacious Woah there, cool your dial-up, man. Some of us here in 2011 have more than enough ways of getting in touch with the outside world without power or a landline telephone. If you like them and all, well, we won’t judge out loud.
