What could this lump be?

Asked by FluffyChicken (5516points) April 1st, 2011

I have a hard lump, which I just now discovered, on my neck just behind my jawbone. It is somewhat tender, and does not move with the skin when I rub it gently. My first guess would be swollen lymph node what do you think?

I AM about to make a doctor’s appointment.

Some things that may have caused or affected this;
-I’ve been stretching the piercings in my ears, and I did mess up that ear and have to go down a size recently.
– there’s black mold in my room.
-I have allergies to pets and dust and pollen.
-I have had cysts on my chest in the past. It kind of feels like one.

any thoughts?

it is a sign from God telling you to go to the doctor

FluffyChicken's avatar

haha. Thank you @DrBill I shall do so. Considering it is now the weekend, and doctors aren’t open until monday, any suggestions on what I should do until then?

Have you ever seen the mummy? It’s a scarab beetle isn’t it? just kidding.

Absolutely no way to tell. You need to see a doctor. Lumps could be almost anything.

Thank you very much. I likes me some links.

I would try putting warm compresses on it and see if it draws anything up if it could be cystic acne, if it is still there by Monday and the compresses have done nothing then MAKE and appointment with your doctor they will be the only one who can help you with this by see it.

thanks! I’ll be going into health works whether it changes or not. I’ll try the warm compress for now.

Possibly a clogged saliva gland? Heat will help that.

thanks. It seems to be in that general spot.

I had that as well! Yes it is a swollen lymph node. The doctor should give you pills. Does it kinda hurt or feel weird when you swallow? If yes, then I’m positive it’s a swollen lymph node.

I had a lump along my waist band wear my undies ride and I was concerned like you.
My doctor, she was not concerned, but volunteered to take a tissue sample if I wanted an answer-I declined. She felt it was likely non-significant and I agreed, just anarchic fat cells.
I think my paranoia was probably driven by my mom having a lump, years ago, and it was not a good lump.
If you are concerned get it checked out and relieve yourself of the anxiety, and potential problem. My guess it is as others have suggested.

This is one of those things that is impossible to diagnose over the internet. If it doesn’t hurt too much then you can wait until Monday. If it’s very tender you should go to the doctor sooner.

FluffyChicken's avatar

thanks. it’s tender, but really only if I touch it. I’ll have to wait.

Rarebear's avatar

OK. If it gets bigger or gets more tender, go see someone.

@ariana123 I realise you just joined fluther and in no way want to discourage you from contributing but saying yes it is a swollen lymph node…” seems more than inappropriate, it is a definitive answer and there is no way you can know by the description alone, even if you are a doctor… I think it would be far more appropriate to say “this is what happened to me…, maybe you have a similar problem” : ^) please don’t take this comment the wrong way

Adagio, I appreciate your vigilantism. I get that no one can diagnose over the internet. btw.. I love your profile pic. Modigliani?

@FluffyChicken Modigliani? Yes Vigilantism? please explain more…...

FluffyChicken's avatar

oh like going around making sure no one is getting hurt from hastily worded medical advice :)

FluffyChicken's avatar

no, vigilantism. it’s vigilance with attitude.
