Could a player in the draft choose to stay in college because of the lock out?

Asked by jgrissett (468points) April 1st, 2011

Since there probably won’t be an NFL season this year due to the NFL lockout, can a college player who registered for the draft their Junior un-register from the draft and play another year in college?

can. A few years back (I can’t remember the player but he played football) was said to be a 1st round draft choice and some team in the NFL wanted him and even drafted him, but he turned down the offer before the deadline that he would lose his eligibility I think, because he wanted to finish up his senior year and get his degree. I can’t see why this would be that much different.

No, when a player applies for the draft and is accepted, they essentially renounce their amateur status and are no longer eligible to play college football.

Before applying, players can request an evaluation of their likely draft position to help them make a decision.

College basketball is a little bit different in that you can declare your intentions to enter the draft (and possibly apply) but as long as you don’t hire an agent you can still back out as long as you do it before a cutoff date.

Well, that’s unfortunate. I’m an Alabama Crimson Tide fan, and we are losing Julio Jones and Mark Ingram in draft and I was just hoping there was a slim chance for them to come back and play another year even though they already declared they were eligible for the draft. Thanks @funkdaddy for your answer! i will now go and sulk at the lost of two of our best plays…
