Some iTouch issues?

Asked by El_Cadejo (34610points) April 10th, 2011

I recently got a broken iPod touch from a friend at work and am trying to fix it.

The major issue is the battery is pretty much shot so it works when plugged in but about 5min after its unplugged it dies. So thats an obvious fix, replace the battery. Problem is i have no clue what generation this iPod is nor does the person I got it from, anyone know a way to figure this out?

Second issue and more confusing the iTouch wont play music. When I pick a song it shows like its going to start playing the song but then doesnt and goes back to the title screen showing all the songs.

Ive tried goin in Pandora to play a song and it says that it is unable to play so there is something seriously wrong with the playback ability. Ive tried searching online for solutions but couldnt find anything.

Ive tried all the obvious things like restarting the iPod, and restoring it to factory defaults though iTunes.

Aside from the issues described above, the iPod works perfectly fine in every way.

Anyone got any ideas to solve my general ipod problems?

Let us start with the generation. What is the capacity? That will give me a clue.

There are no 3rd-gens that have 8GB, they didn’t start with 64GB until the 3rd-gens, and only the first two generations had 16GB as an option. All four generations offered a 32GB version though.

If it has an external volume switch, it’s not a 1st-gen.
The 4th-gen (the current models) look pretty distinctive and cannot be mistaken for a 1st-3rd-gen.

Its 8gigs and has the external volume switches

I would say that it is most likely a 2nd-gen then.

I will have to think about the rest and get back to you; its time for me to get headed to work.

@jerv no problem. Take your time. Thanks for the help :)

Another thing I seemed to notice. Im not so sure its the battery now. Its like I charge the iPod and it works fine and as long as it stays on, the battery will last but as soon as I turn the iPod off, I cant get it to turn back on without plugging it in. Pretty odd.

I’m assuming you’ve already done all the default resets and updates and hard resets.
Edit: Read the details.

The problem is that if the battery really is shot you’re going to have a hell of a time replacing it. If I’m correct, you have to send it back to Apple to get the “official” replacement, and getting inside those things is really tricky, as is putting it back together. So I’d say if you’re stuck on getting an iPod I wouldn’t put too much effort into this, as it could get pretty expensive.

@dverhey Its actually not that hard to pull them apart. Me and a friend replaced his screen on his since it was cracked so thats not really a concern of mine.

I think that it depends highly on your manual dexterity. I find it moderately tricky (enough to prefer my SanDisk) but not onerous.

Does it have difficulty with all sound or just music? Do games also have the same issue?

My wife has a 2nd-gen and it does have external volume controls. So does my 3rd-gen iPod touch. This link should help: http://support.apple.com/specs/#ipodtouch

Also, you can get the parts and tools you need to fix a number of things on your iPod touch from iFixit: http://www.ifixit.com/iPod-Parts/iPod-Touch-1st-Gen

Not sure what to say about your music playback issues. Assuming the normal course of reset/restores hasn’t fixed it, then I can’t help but wonder if you’ve got some kind of logic board issue. But really, I’m not qualified to say.

@robmandu The only reason I haven’t suggested that possibility is optimism. My 8 GB 2nd-gen had similar issues near the end.

@jerv it has that issue with all sounds as I;ve just found out.

It also seems it has to be a 2nd gen since 3rd wasnt made in 8gb and we already ruled out the other two.
