Who has some experience with the fluther t-shirt sizing?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) April 11th, 2011

I ordered the women’s XL. The sizing is hard to figure due to the high % of spandex in the fabric. If the shirt were made of only cotton (as in the good old days) it would fit perfectly…a slight shape yet not too clingy.

This one feels like sausage casing. it is meant for a young woman with no extra flesh around the middle and hardly any hips and is also much too long.

So I want to re-order and get a man’s long-sleeve , but have no idea about the size.

Bonus: I would love to give my woman’s navy long-sleeved shirt (XL) to the first person here who asks nicely. Zazzle told me to find it a nice home. PM me with contact info. Check measurements at the Zazzle site.

What brand of tee did you buy? I know the American Apparel ones run small, but some of the others don’t appear to.

I soooooooo did not know that we had t-shirts on Fluther!

augustlan's avatar

@KatetheGreat T-shirts, stickers, keychains, mugs and a hoodie! There’s a link at the bottom right hand corner of our home page. Or, click here.

Thanks @augustlan! That’s sooooooo cool!

@KatetheGreat I bet you didn’t know there was a fluther photo bucket also. I can’t link because I’m using a new computer that I haven’t quite figured out how to transfer my files, but if you ask Auggie, I’m sure she will.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@chyna Really? I swear, I learn something new every day.

Sounds like I need to ask a new meta question (re: photobucket). I’m on it!

gailcalled's avatar

So, what happened to my question about sizing? It was an American Apparel. Is there a way of ordering another brand with Dr. Jelly on it?

Oops, sorry Gail for derailing your thread.

augustlan's avatar

@gailcalled Yes, I’m pretty sure there are other brands to choose from. Let me go take a look and I’ll get back to you.

@everyone else: Go to the new meta question.

Ok, I think you’re going to want to order the “basic long sleeve T-shirt”. Both the Bella and the American Apparel tees run small, but the basic one has a standard (guys/unisex) fit. (You can find out about the fit of the shirt you choose by going to the bottom left corner of the page. There’s also a size chart button next to the ‘select a size’ field.) It’s also probably cheaper, so there’s a bonus!

When you’re ordering, in the box that says “Choose your style and color”, there’s a little red link to the right that says “See all”. Click on that, and look for the basic long sleeve. Click on that, and it’ll use that shirt instead of the AA one. If you need any help, just let me know.

@augustlan: Thank you. I have been poking around the site but was hoping to learn about personal experience. The unisex run baggy and very long, and I can’t tell whether the cotton fabric used has spandex added also.

Interestingly, I have had no takers for the free, brand-new t that I am offering. Maybe I should have placed this in general?

I’d be on that t-shirt in a hot second (or maybe it would be on me?) if it would fit me.

Son got me a medium women’s for Mother’s Day which was tiny; sent it back for a man’s medium which just fits but is longish.

gailcalled's avatar

@janbb: Does the fabric have lycra in it? If it is the plain old-fashioned unvarnished cotton, I can shorten it easily.

What’s your regular woman’s size?

T-shirt has been taken by the highest bidder… @KatetheGreat

I am a 12 in tops usually. Would have to look at the t-shirt; don’t remember fabric. I’m at my son’s; won’t be home til the weekend.

Thanks. I bet that things have finally started to bloom there.

We went from Asheville to NJ to Westchester: I feel like I am following the degression of spring!

gailcalled's avatar

Ashville must have been gorgeous. We are finally on course here; yesterday I had my first sighting of the great blue heron in the pond and today Milo treated me to the first mouse, sans head and so small that I almost didn’t recognize it. Its appendages were shell pink.

A woman’s small would probably be perfect for Milo.

janbb's avatar

It would fit Milo to a T.

I just received the men’s long-sleeved basic in L. It isn’t too stretchy and fits in the important areas. I will recut and hem the neck and bottom to get a rounded neck and a shorter drop.

augustlan's avatar

Glad it worked out! Let me know how you like the shirt afterward. I don’t have one of the new ones yet.

gailcalled's avatar

@augustlan: Will do, probably while watching “Survivor” tonight. I also want to launder it before wearing.

gailcalled's avatar

The men’s long-sleeved L has sleeves that are too long, shoulders that hang off mine and needs about 3” whacked off the bottom and rehemmed. But the bust and waist fit well and I love the navy blue. I shove up the sleeves and am happy with the fit. Without the lycra it would be too baggy but with it, I like the look. (I wear a 12W top or 12–14 with 10% lycra.)

And again, due to the fact that it is a M’s L, the neck is loose enough without alteration.

augustlan's avatar

Sounds like just the way I like my tees to fit, with room to spare. I’m going to have to get myself one soon.
