Silver Ion technology?

Asked by demonictruth (455points) April 11th, 2011

So my dad went out and bought me some Degree deodorant with “Silver Ion Technology” and it really intrigued me. So if you jellies would be so kind, please explain what that is and why it is so innovational?

Interesting. I’ve never heard the term before, so I looked it up. Apparently, silver ion technology has been used in clothes dryers. The information below doesn’t sound very good, especially if it is a product applied directly to the body:

In 2007, the EPA announced that the silver ion technology should be classified as a pesticide since Samsung claimed that it kills 99.9 percent of odor-causing bacteria in the clothing. The matter is still being investigated, and it is not known what affect the silver ions may have on humans or on the environment in which they are drained. However, the EPA has allowed silver ion washers to still be sold, for now. Source

Well that is very…interesting. Sounds like it is used primarily to kill germs and bacteria which is good, but like you said, the other part sounds kind of sketchy. I thank you for your searching effort.

Keep in mind that the EPA made the announcement in 2007. That was ~4 years ago. I doubt that, despite it being a product of a British/Dutch-based company, the US would approve it without testing it. Personally, I’m leery of any body product that might clog pores, such as an antiperspirant. Use a deodorant and wear a t-shirt instead. I find white t-shirts under a button-down shirt sexy.

I generally try to avoid body care products that have the word “technology” on their label. I don’t need “technology” to stay clean and smell good. Maybe I’m a bit old fashioned, but it kind of makes me suspect poison.

Well both of you make valid points. Personally I go with generic stuff like Old Spice original or Speed Stick or something. I just asked my dad to pick something up while at the store because I desperately needed an underarm product because I’m an avid runner and I am currently on my high school’s track team. The excessively long title of the deodorant intrigued me.

And @Pied_Pfeffer, I would normally wear a white shirt under a button up to school, but I don’t have too many of them. =P

Sounds similar to colloidal silver. Silver is basically harmless, though large amounts of it in your body can make your skin take on a blueish shade.

I buy health store deodorant. The more ingredients I can pronounce and recognize the better!
