It doesn’t necessarily matter anymore. Almost everyone in the top 5 gets a record deal of some sort, so winning doesn’t make them so “special”. It also seems as if their fame only lasts for a little while.

@KatetheGreat It also seems as if their fame only lasts for a little while.

That’s because pop music is about marketing, not talent. Once the hype from the show dies down, nobody cares. Talented people are in abundance; you can find a lot of them on Youtube. The main difference between someone performing in front of their webcam, and someone performing in front of thousands of people is the marketing.

Just look at Susan Boyle. Yes, she had a wonderful voice, but the only reason anyone cared was because of her appearance on the show. Now that that gimmick is over, nobody cares.

I looked this up just to see: Season 1 winner: Kelly Clarkson. Season 2 winner: Ruben Studdard. This is the season that gave us Clay Aiken. Season 3 winner: Fantasia Barrino. Season 4 winner: Carrie Underwood. Season 5 winner: Taylor Hicks. This is the season that gave us Kellie Pickler and Chris Daughtry. Season 6 winner: Jordin Sparks. Season 7 winner: David Cook. Season 8 winner: Kris Allen. The season that gave us Adam Lambert. Season 9 winner: Lee DeWyze.

It looks like the earlier winners and contestants are doing better on the pop charts and in the traditional “famous” fashion than the later winners. I think they have all had their chance at fame and fortune, but some like Fantasia sorta blew their chances.

Also @chocolatechip, Susan Boyle wasn’t on American Idol. She was on Britain’s Got Talent. I saw somewhere that Glenn Close is playing Boyle in a film about Boyle’s life.

I don’t know and frankly I don’t care.
I just watch the show to see people who think they can sing. XD

@bkcunningham I never said Susan Boyle was on American Idol. The point remains though.

It never did matter…..At least to anyone that isn’t getting a share of the money leeched from the artist lol.

I think if you can make it to the top 12 and are able to support yourself on your own and get a record deal, then you’re good.

SuperMouse's avatar

You mean there was a time when it did matter?

erichw1504's avatar

When my daughter turns 12 and tries out for American Idol Season 22 (they’ll lower the age limit to 12 by then) it will matter to her! So, all you haters stop hatin’!

saintDrew's avatar

It matters to all those on the show who takes singing seriously..
I don’t think it’s even about the fame. American Idol is a major stepping stone
for any aspiring artist.

Well, it’s pretty much a popularity contest, so whoever wins knows that they are the most popular/most good looking.
@bkcunningham what happened to fantasia anyway?

mowens's avatar

I would argue it never did matter…

It certainly didn’t matter to Jennifer Hudson. So why should it matter now?!

dxs's avatar

Jennifer hudson is amazing…I don’t care if she did or didn’t win, she has an amazing voice!!
i guess that answers your question….

MysticRain's avatar

No because, almost everyone who has won in the past 2 years still havent gone anywhere in the music buisness.

erichw1504's avatar

@MysticRain Yeah, I think I got farther in the music business than the past 2 winners and I didn’t even audition!
