If you suspected you were dreaming, what would you do to find out for sure?

If you were in a situation so bizarre that it occurred to you that it might be a dream, what would you do to confirm or disprove it?

Open my eyes? Or are they already open? If so, I think I’d shut them.

I have literally pinched myself before. That made me feel like I was in a sitcom.

I am usually pretty sure that when I am dreaming. When I know I am I make a conscious effort to wake myself up. So far it has worked every time.

@SuperMouse
So far it has worked every time.” Has it, now?

I have this top, if i spin it and it keeps spinning, i know that i am dreaming.

I would find the nearest tall building and fling myself from the top of it. If Inception has taught us anything, it’s that falling is the best way to wake yourself up. If it turned out I was really awake, then I would be very relieved that I knew for sure now.

Pissing your pants, if you are asleep you will probably wake up.

@Mariah I just did that last night!

Slap myself silly. :)

Ask anyone in my dream for ID and if they refuse or balk at that request….throw meatballs at them and see if they turn into finger paints and if they do turn into finger paints I hop in my rollercoaster and head over to Meagan Foxes house and ask William Shanter what the combination to my safe full of gold is. From there I wake up and go to work.

According to the movie Waking Life, go find a light switch and try turning it on or off. You will find that the light levels rarely change when flipping a light switch in a dream. Fact.

yankeetooter's avatar

It depends…if I’m liking the dream, nothing would wake me up…:)

If I’m awake, I can open my eyes.

I remind myself of that when I’m stuck sometimes in an in-between state. And sometimes I can open my eyes, and sometimes I can’t.

Blondesjon's avatar

Nothing.

i kinda feel like that all the time . . .

6rant6's avatar

I’ve had the experience of thinking, “This is a dream. I’m going to wake up now.” And then I wake up, but it turns out I’m still dreaming – I’ve just dreamed I woke up.

Not really any consequences to it. Anybody else have that?

Blondesjon's avatar

The worst dream I have is a dream in which I dream that I can’t sleep. I usually wake up exhausted and ready to cry.

i really wish i was making this up

Jeruba's avatar

@6rant6, yes. I’ve dreamed three layers deep.

@Blondesjon, I believe you. I’ve had that happen too. A thousand things interfere with my trying to sleep (in the dream), often hordes of people crowding into my house and even the bedroom. I hate those dreams.

ragingloli's avatar

in the past I used to dream that I woke up and was going to be late for school. So I concentrated to turn back time, which caused me to wake up for real. Or so I think

Blondesjon's avatar

@Jeruba . . . I wish mine were as exciting. I simply spend the night dreaming that I am tossing and turning in my bed, unable to get comfortable, and awaken in a state that I would trade for the worst hangover any day.

blueiiznh's avatar

I usually jump in front of oncomming traffic. That is a sure fire way to know.

I have very vivid dreams, and often. The way I wake myself from a dream I don’t like is I stop running away from the murderous Cthulu panda and close my eyes real tight. When I open them again, I am safe in my bed. Or deep inside the belly of a murderous Cthulu panda.
The best way to practice this technique is early morning dreams because I find them to be the shallowest and easiest to manipulate.

Hit the nearest person to me (in real life that will be my husband who will promptly wake up and make sure I wake up too). I did hit him once while dreaming. I thought someone was attacking him so I started hitting them only I was actually hitting him in my sleep. Apparently I punch really, really hard!

ddude1116's avatar

I look at my watch, if I can read it, I’m awake. But I dig dreaming, so I usually avoid looking at my watch, it’s my alternative to mind-altering substances.

chocolatechip's avatar

I’m pretty sure it’s the same for everyone else, but when I am awake, I know I are awake. The only way that I might suspect that I am dreaming is if I am actually dreaming.

filmfann's avatar

Electric switches don’t behave normally in dreams. It is a good indicator.

ucme's avatar

Well, if i’m about to mount the rear end of a donkey with my pants around my ankles…........that better be a dream, okay a fucking weird one, but a dream all the same.

Ladymia69's avatar

I have tried in dreams that were disturbing to shut my eyes and shake my whole body, and sometimes I end up yelling out loud before I wake up…dreams are so freaking weird.

Ladymia69's avatar

@filmfann I already said that earlier. :)

@ladymia69 Saw that, gave you lurve, and backed up your statement! :)
