Does anyone know how I can get the original Pears soap in the US?

Asked by geeky_mama (8930points) April 15th, 2011

I love the original (200 year old recipe) Pears soap. It has been my old stand-by for years, and I used to pick some up on every international trip, or buy batches online.
Back in 2009 apparently the parent company (Unilever) outsourced the manufacture of the soap to a company in Mumbai and simultaneously CHANGED the ingredients (and added a bunch of harsh, foul smelling chemicals). Now if I attempt to order online via Amazon I only ever receive the nasty version (chemical-laden Indian manufactured version) of the soap.

I hear as of March the original version is available in the UK again… Does anyone know of a way to get this imported to the US, or a retailer who sells online in the US the truly ORIGINAL (not yucky chemical-y) version of the Pears soap?

The have it in lots of stores around here. I saw it in the English import store, but I have also seen it at our local grocery store.

@diavolobella – Nope. That’s the nasty Indian kind. Look at the extra chemical ingredients.

The old bar contained just eight ingredients – including rosemary and thyme extracts and also Pears Fragrance Essence – but these were ditched and replaced with 24 ingredients.

Among the new ingredients are;

* Sorbitol – a sugar substitute often used in diet foods and also as a thickener in toothpaste.

* Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – A wetting agent used to allow the soap to glide across the skin. A health and safety warning about SLS states that it ‘may worsen skin problems’ and that it can cause oral sores.

* Linalool – A chemical found in plants used as a calming scent. A health and safety warning about Linalool states that it may cause allergic reactions such as eczema.

The Vermont Country Store notes that their bar is sourced from India and has the extra (skin-damaging) chemicals.

I’m looking for NEWLY manufactured (only just available since March 2011 in the UK) OLD recipe Pears.

@Skaggfacemutt—where are you? What English import store? If it’s truly shipped from the UK since March of 2011 I’ll call them up and order.

(Or, as often as I travel..maybe it’ll be someplace I’ll be passing through soon..)

Ah…never mind. On reading this: http://www.greyhares.org/the-great-pears-soap-disaster/—I find that the original Pears is not actually ever coming back. And that I should boycott all Unilever products.

<sigh> Sad.

Maybe Kirk’s Transparent soap would be OK. They don’t give exact ingredients on the web, but it might be worth looking into.

Thanks @jaytkay – you read my mind. I started looking for a new glycerin soap without added harsh chemicals. (and the more I read about Unilever, the more I decided I won’t be buying ANYTHING they make anymore!)
I ended up finding some soap on Etsy – but in a pinch, our nearby grocery does sell Kirks Castile..so I can try that, too.

@geeky_mama The British import store is in downtown Salt Lake City. http://www.thelondonmarket.net/

@geeky_mama I’m not seeing Pears on their web site, but I saw it in their store. They also have Cadbury curly-whirly bars, Five Roses tea, and all sorts of other goodies.

I clicked on some of their merchandise, and there seems to be something wrong with their web site, so here is their phone number: (801) 531–7074.

@Skaggfacemutt—thanks for the lead.. but since I’ve now learned there is no hope to get “real” Pears ever again, I ordered some other glycerin soap from Etsy. And, I’m trying a new Neutrogena bar that is in their new naturals line—it has a very simple, short list of 99% natural ingredients. So far, so good.

Hello pears.

I rang your Australian supplier (Pental) on 03 92512311.
To ask them if the original Pears soap is back.
The person I spoke to sent me a 3 pack of Pears Transparent.
The batch number is 1112B655.
We opened the package, only to be set back with the strong chemical smell. Not very nice at all!
So we gave it a try, 3 showers later and it was gone!
We will never purchase it again!
I am now asking you to please bring back the “original” pears transparent soap.
The soap with the beautiful aroma that is darker than the new one and lasts for 28 showers!
Thank you
