Why are most cartoon movies so stupid?

Asked by blueberry_kid (5957points) April 17th, 2011

I went to go see the movies “Rio” and “Hop”, horrible boring movies. I didn’t like them at all. They both got to a point where it was all talking and nothing funny was going on and the only parts I was looking forward to were the ones in the commercials. And this isn’t just for these two cartoon movies, thier for almost all of them.

So, why are all cartoon movies so stupid!?

Because they’re for children. Kids are easily entertained.

Go see Rango-that looked funny!

All cartoon movies? You’ve seen them all? I’m impressed.

Although your view seems to have hardened from the start of the question to the end. Started off at ‘most’ and ended up at ‘all’!

Strangely enough, I’ve seen many cartoon movies that weren’t stupid, so I think you haven’t actually seen them all. Or, possibly, you are just expressing a personal opinion about something you don’t actually have complete experience of, dressed up as a fact?

Perhaps a more interesting question is, why does astrix24 dislike cartoon movies so much?

@Seelix – cartoon movies are for kids? Perhaps most, certainly not all

@gmander – Of course not all are made for kids. But the two that the OP mentioned are made for kids.

@Seelix – ok, I see where the confusion arose.

untalented producers ? They pay big names to do voice acting and obviously wouldn’t spend a fraction of that on writing. bottom line types imagine that will maximize box office.
Also I see a sad trend to relying on fancier CGI (computer graphics) to make more wow factor in cartoons instead of some good old imagination and good writing.
The CGI “art” while technically impressive (all that 3-d ray tracing and physics engines borrowed from video games yum!) is less satisfying that stuff that’s actually rendered by a thinking breathing feeling artist.
The contemporary stuff might get good box office once through but who will care decades from now. On the other hand if you’ve seen Snow White or Fantasia you’ll remember that and would probably watch again.

Pixar movies are great. I just saw TS3 and cried a little. Didn’t it win an oscar?

Because there can only be one Spongebob!
All other cartoons are puerile pretenders to the golden throne of animated excellence. ☺

They’re for kids, but I also don’t understand why some adults like those movies. Some people I know actually pay to see them…but they don’t have kids…..

One of the best cartoons ever was Angry Beavers. Right up there with Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Because western animated movies are made for children, that is why they are dumb. In fact, the only good western animated movie is Felidae.

@astrix24 unfortunately it happens every once in a while, a cartoon movie or any movie for that matter will never satisfy you even if it’s not that stupid. Sometimes people have expectations and when it’s not met, you get disappointed and frustrated. Try to think of what in a cartoon movie you really are looking for. Maybe you would enjoy those made for both kids and adults or those for adults only. Toy Story 3 in my opinion is the perfect and I mean perfect animated movie. The technique and storytelling process are impeccable. It has something for everyone which connects to that which makes us human.

There is stupidity in every form of media and sheer genius in every form as well. The tricky part is finding the little bits of gold amongst the heaping piles of shit that now a days seem to consume most forms of media.

Hop looked like a seasonal cash-in, which happens a lot of live action movies too. I saw a few good cartoon movies lately, Rango and 9 were a blast, as was Toy Story 3.

A lot of movies (cartoon or not) are stupid because they’re decreed by suits with MBAs, and so the scripts are churned out with an eye to keeping costs down and being politically correct. The good movies are the ones that are inspired by the writers and have little chance of getting produced, but occasionally do.

Oh but they aren’t, yeah sure like any other genre there’s the usual collection of garbage, like the two you mentioned. Most pixar movies are incredibly well made groundbreaking little gems. As are the dreamworks films. Course, i’m just one big kid talking here.

@seazen_ Toy Story 3 won Best Animated Oscar.

Both Toy Story 3 and Up were terrific cartoons; no surprise there, since they have the Pixar brand.
I have heard The Fantastic Mr. Fox was also quite good, and have heard good things about Rango.
So, clearly not all cartoon movies are stupid, just as not all live action movies are smart.
Maybe you should read a few reviews before going to the cinema. It may give you an idea of whether the film is your taste or not.

I don’t think most cartoon movies are stupid at all.
Over The Hedge, Ice Age, Toy Story, Wall-E, etc. are all fantastic films.

I saw ‘Cop Out’ and ‘Sex & the City 2,’ and they were boring, stupid and stupidly boring. Why are all live-action movies ever made so stupid? Is it me, or…

Oh wait. It’s totally me.

Ah! I loved Space Jam. “I see aliens. Little aliens. The broke into your bodies to steal your talents so they can win a basketball game against Bugs Bunny.” The fortune teller was the only one who told them what had really happened, and they walked out in a huff. Had me on the floor laughing!

“It’s on right now! On Cartoon Network!”

Drat! They’re showing “Johnny Test” here on Time Warner, in the PST zone.

Some of the best films I’ve seen the past year were made for children. Despicable Me, Toy Story 3 and today I watched Tangled with my daughter. Both my husband and I enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to Hoodwinked Too.

There are crappy comedies, crappy Scifi and horror films. I can’t remember the last romantic comedy I’ve enjoyed. Save your money with Skyline. Worst piece of crap I’ve ever seen.

Ah, the Parn is broken. Lame, 1895 is an amazing movie.

Cartoons have fallen into a similar slump as any other genre: some are good, some are bad, I think. It just depends on how much effort is put into them. Toy Story 3 was fantastic. Megamind was great once, but it won’t stand as well a second time. Inception was fantastic, but it loses its luster after a few watch-throughs. It’s not just cartoons…

@fundevogel Loved the Triplets of Belleville. Also got to go with Grave of the Fireflies. Possibly the saddest film ever.

fundevogel's avatar

@GladysMensch ah, I saw that one in my history of animation class, paired with Barefoot Gen. That was an intense day.

@GladysMensch Grave of the Fireflies : That one really is sad. It even made my dad cry.
