What do I tell someone who just got broken up with?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7991points) April 18th, 2011

So, one of my friends got broken up with by his girlfriend of two years – I’m not sure what to say to him right now besides that I’m sorry.

His plan right now is to get drunk – and he’s been in jail once already for fighting (he lives in Denmark, so I guess that’s how their rules work or something).

Most often, you tell very little to someone who just got broken up with.

Instead, you listen to them.

They’ll tell you, more often then not, either blatantly or subtly, what they need from you.

First, tell him that you want to be here for him, but you cannot answer or understand his questions, if he is drunk.

Alcohol is not the answer, especially if he is under age.

By telling him this, maybe he will forget about the alcohol and have a heart to heart talk with you.

You are a good friend to him and it shows. jp

It’s better to just be there for support rather than say anything. You don’t want to say the wrong thing and make him more upset, so just be there. Let him tell you what happened and what he needs. Also, try to discourage the drinking; it never helps.

Nothing but time will help. Let him get drunk unless you think he’ll get belligerent.

Tell them it sucks but eventually it gets a little bit better. Other than that, I think the advice to just be a listener is spot on.

Having been in his shoes I can tell you there is sadly nothing you can tell him.

Just be there for him as best you can.

I’d offer to take him out for a nice meal or a coffee to vent.

@john65pennington, unless it’s changed in the last three years, drinking age in Denmark is age 16.
